Sherman Stars - Working Together for a Bright Future!
Principal's Message
Hi Sherman Families:
Fall is here! The weather has been unpredictable so far this year. We have been having an unusual number of indoor recesses due to all of the rain. Temperatures have been up and down as well. If your house is anything like mine, I often question what type of clothing I should have my children wear when I send them off in the morning. Please review the cold weather gear guidelines below to help you in your decision making. We will send home a letter later in the month with more information on our “cold weather gear” guidelines.
Our Sherman River Run is tonight at Owen Park starting at 7 p.m. If you don’t have any plans, please come! There is on-site registration still available. This will be the 6th Annual River Run, and all proceeds go to support our Sherman Steering Committee.
Parent/Teacher Conferences are just under three weeks away. October 25 is our date for Parent/Teacher Conferences, so our students will not be in school that day. All schools will be closed the following date, Friday, October 26 and Monday, October 29. Please plan to be in town and available on October 25 to conference with your child’s teacher since this is our only scheduled date for fall conferences.
We will be using Skyward to schedule conferences again this year. Please look for directions on how to sign up in your student’s folder early next week.
Enjoy the weekend!!!

If the temperature is 40 degrees and under, legs and arms need to be covered. (examples: leggings, jeans, pants -- jacket or coat)
Sherman Steering Committee (SSC)
The SSC is made up of parents and staff members who are passionate about making your child(ren)’s experience at Sherman Elementary the best it can be. However, we cannot do this alone! We have a meeting once a month; everyone is encouraged to join! Grandparents are also invited to participate!
Please come and learn how you can share your talents with the Sherman Steering Committee by attending the first meeting of the 2018-2019 school year on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at 6 p.m. in the Sherman LMC.

Sherman Steering Committee Culver's Nights:
Our next Culver's night will be this coming Monday! October 8, 2018
Culver's would like to welcome all Sherman families and friends to stop in for a meal and help raise funds for the SSC. All you have to do is eat at the Culver's at 2525 Folsom Street in Eau Claire, WI. The second Monday of each month anytime from 10:00 am-10:00 pm while using a voucher that has been sent home with your child. (There will be new vouchers each month.) Culver's will then donate 10 % of all sales from the vouchers to the SSC.
*Please remember to bring your voucher with you when you go to Culvers the second Monday of each month and have the Culver's employee sign the voucher when you place your order to ensure that Sherman's SSC receives credit for your purchase. Feel free to make copies of the voucher and hand them out to everyone you know! Thank you!
Flu Shot Clinics this fall
Dear Parents,
The Eau Claire City-County Health Department will be holding Flu Shot Clinics this fall at schools. Flu shots will be no cost for children up to 19 years. Adults can get flu shots at these clinics for $44. See attachment for times and places.
- Flu shots protect you and your family against respiratory flu. Respiratory influenza symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, muscles aches, and fatigue. The flu can last for a week or longer and can lead to pneumonia and hospitalization.
- Flu shots do not protect you from the “stomach flu.” The stomach flu is a 24-hour virus with symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
- Flu shots cannot give you the flu. Sometimes people get the flu or a flu-like illness after getting a flu shot. Several reasons may happen, but the vaccine itself cannot give you the flu.
- Flu shots are safe. The flu vaccine has a safety track record of more than 50 years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) works closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other partners to ensure the highest standards for a flu vaccine.
- Flu shots provide the best protection to prevent the flu. Although the effectiveness of the flu vaccine varies year to year, it is the best tool we have to keep ourselves and our loved ones protected.
For more information, see www.cdc.gov/flu. Public Health nurses will be available at these clinics to give flu shots and answer any questions you have about the flu or the vaccine.
Royal Credit Union School $ense Opens this Month!
Starting October 18, Royal Credit Union School $ense will be open at Sherman every Thursday during lunch! Student team members have been hired from 5th-grade classes and are being trained to help young savers with their deposits.
Why should we save with Royal School $ense?
Saving at school is fun!
Kids earn a prize for every fourth deposit!
It’s easy to bring a deposit to school each week!
It’s a great way to raise money for the school!
How does saving at school help raise money for Sherman?
Your school earns $250 for every 500 deposits. Last year Royal Credit Union donated $750 to your school, because of student deposits!
How can I get my student started saving at school?
There are two easy ways to get started:
1. Open accounts online by using this link https://www.rcu.org/youth-and-community/school-sense and clicking Apply Now. –or –
2. Stop by any Royal Credit Union office, and our friendly team members will be happy to help!
Bonus! When you sign your child up for a new School $ense account, Royal deposits the first $5!
If my child already has a Royal Credit Union account, how can they start saving with School $ense?
Good news – your student is ready to save at school! Just email us at schoolsense@rcu.org with your student’s full name, teacher name, and grade, and we will deliver a new pouch to them at school.
We welcome your questions about Royal School $ense and how you can get your child started saving at school. Please contact Diana Rohlik at 715-855-5471 or diana.rohlik@rcu.org
Free & Reduced Meals
This is just a reminder to apply for free or reduced meals for children if you think your family may qualify. Application forms are available at the district office or at our Sherman school office. Information is kept strictly confidential. Information about eligibility (including income guidelines) can be found HERE.
Families may be wondering if they need to fill out an application this year if their child was approved last year. The answer from the website reads as follows:
"Yes. Your child’s application is only good for that school year and the first few days of this school year, through October 16, 2018. You must send in a new application unless the school told you that your child is eligible for the new school year. If you do not send in a new application that is approved by the school or you have not been notified that your child is eligible for free meals, your child will be charged the full price for meals.”
Odyssey of the Mind – Looking for the Creative and the Dramatic and the Mechanic
This year the Gifted Education Department will once again provide students the opportunity to participate in programming to help develop the creative, dramatic, and artistic talents for students in all grade levels within the Eau Claire Area School District. Students have the option to participate in an after-school program called Odyssey of the Mind.
Odyssey of the Mind is the original creative problem-solving program and one of the largest and most successful worldwide! It was founded 37 years ago and has been active in Wisconsin for over 30+ years.
Odyssey of the Mind in the Eau Claire Area School District relies heavily on parent volunteers to provide coaching for elementary teams. If you are interested in forming and/or coaching a team at your elementary school, contact me for more information. I can coordinate a parent night to help recruit more coaches and students for teams.
All teams attend the state competition in Madison on March 23, 2019. Transportation is provided, and the celebration is awesome.
We have a Parent Interest meeting on Thursday, October 18th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the District Office. Come one, come all!
There will be training for Odyssey of the Mind coaches on Saturday, November 3rd from 9 – 11:30 a.m. at NorthStar Middle School. Contact Michelle Kooiker, District Odyssey of the Mind Coordinator, for more information at 715-852-3110.
Please help!
