Health Office - Mrs. Parke
Dear Families,
Food Allergy Awareness Week
Food Allergy Awareness Week is honored each May to shine a spotlight on the seriousness of food allergies. This year Food Allergy Awareness Week was May 14 - May 20, 2017. Information about food allergies was presented during morning announcements. In addition a video was shown in each of the classrooms that addressed the definition, the most common foods causing food allergies, symptoms, treatment and what students with food allergies and students without food allergies can do to keep every child in school healthy and safe.
Seizure Recognition and First Aid Management for 5th Graders
Fifth Graders attended and actively participated in a program this past week which was coordinated by the Nursing Department. The program focused on recognizing seizures and first aid management. It was presented by Ms. Andrea Racioppi, Associate Director of the Epilepsy Foundation. The 3 most common types of seizures were discussed: tonic clonic, absence and complex partial. The Do’s and Dont’s of seizure management were also addressed. The pneumonic “TRUST” was provided to help students remember how they can help in the event of a person experiencing a seizure. TRUST stands for T (turn the person on their side), R (remove any glasses or objects), U (use a soft pad under their head), S (stay calm and stay with the person), T (time the seizure). First time seizures or seizures lasting longer than 5 minutes is considered an emergency. Knowing what NOT to do is equally as important and students learned they should never hold a person down, try to stop their movements or put something in their mouth.
Beat the Heat and Sun
As warm and sunny weather approaches, please send in water bottles with your children so they can stay well hydrated and take frequent water breaks throughout the day to prevent heat related illness. Have children wear loose, lightweight, light colored clothing. It is also recommended that sunscreen be applied to your child prior to coming to school. If sunscreen is sent into school, it is the responsibility of your child to apply sunscreen to him/herself. Please review application with your child.
Topics and programs such as these empowers the student with the knowledge to make good decisions regarding health and wellness and meets the district’s strategic goals in these areas. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Thank you for your cooperation,
