Units of Study

Writing: Students have been busy getting to know themselves as writing and exploring their favorite types of writing. Last week, we created "I am" posters using adjectives and descriptive phrases that tell about who we really are. This week, we are reviewing author's purpose. We will be doing a scavenger hunt in class, so I have asked students to try and bring in a newspaper by Wednesday. Students have LOVED hearing about the trivial fact, quote, and vocabulary word of the day each morning during Sacred Writing Time. Ask your child about this sacred part of our day.

Reading: We have been busy learning about characteristics of a reading life. Our classroom library is up and open for business and boy have the kiddos been shopping!! I love seeing them so excited about books! During independent reading time, I have been busy assessing students using our Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark assessment system. I can't wait to share this awesome data with you soon at parent-teacher conferences!

Word Study: Word study is underway! We started our study of common homophones today. Your child should have brought home a 4-page packet of nightly homework sheets. A copy of the weekly HW schedule can be found in a page protector inside your child's binder. The homework packet should stay in your child's HW folder throughout the week because it will come and go from home to school each night.

After some reflecting on today's introduction to our first set of homophones, I do want to let you know that I will now be providing a weekly word chart containing the list of words AND their meanings to the kiddos each week. Students will only have to fill in an example sentence for each word. Poor babies...they had A LOT of writing to fill in on the chart today and persevered without any complaining! I gave them blow pops for their hard work and told them that teachers have lessons to learn from too ;)

Math: We have one short unit on rounding whole numbers under our belt and are busy working on Place Value now. Students will be exploring place value as we work to determine the value of digits in a number, compare numbers, order numbers, and write numbers in standard and expanded forms. Ask your child to show you the comma dance we learned today to help us remember where to place commas in a number! It is a memory I shared with them from my third grade year a LONG time ago!

Important Reminders!!

  • I am in the process of setting up a Shutterfly classroom share site. We have so many AWESOME things going on each day and I want to be able to share our memories with you at home too! You will be receiving an invite from me soon.
  • Please don't forget to send in a snack with your child each day. We have snack during our writing time at 10:00 each morning. Water bottles are also handy.
  • Don't forget to check your child's agenda each night. We are working hard on copying down homework and other important announcements each day.
