Children are fascinated with really large numbers! It can be hard to grasp just how big a thousand is, let alone a million. In this story, a couple of kids try to one up each other on the number of jelly beans they will eat. A giant fold out page demonstrates exactly how many they would need to eat should they actually get 1 million jelly beans.

Math Fables: Lessons that Count by Greg Tang

A series of short fables told in rhyme and ending with a moral. Each tale focuses on a different number and features amazing illustrations. This book is not specifically about place value. Rather, author Greg Tang said this book aims to lay the foundation for place value" and as a "first step to building strong computational skills." The Rekenrek: Making Number...Making Sense

A Rekenrek is a great tool for counting, addition, subtraction, and discovering number relationships. This video shows how using a Rekenrek can help kids make sense of numbers in a concrete way.
