From School Administration
We want to build a strong foundation for those students who have STEM/STEAM related interests, by offering opportunities in primary grades, as well intermediate grades. We need the support of families and our school community to make this work and provide valuable opportunities for our students.
On September 24th and September 26th, we will information sharing nights for students in Grades 1-5 for Destination Imagination and Robotics. Please see dates and times above.
If your child and you are passionate about taking part in these opportunities, please come out to learn more and how you can support these great programs for our students to build lasting knowledge, skills for future opportunities.
Destination Imagination
Are you interested in becoming a parent volunteer manager for one of our Destination Imagination teams at LES? Is your child interested in joining one of our teams? Destination Imagination is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students' creativity, courage, and curiosity through open-ended academic challenges in the fields of STEM, fine arts, and service learning. The challenges for the current DI season can be found here:
https://www.destinationimagination.org/challenge-program/2019-20-challenge-previews/
Managers will run weekly meetings with their team of students (between 4 and 7) and work towards performing a season-long challenge at the regional tournament in February. Students in grades 1-2 will participate in a developmental "Rising Stars" team, and students in grades 3-5 will participate on a competitive team.

From the Health Room
You will be receiving instructions on how to sign your child up in student home folders on September 19th. If you would like for your child to receive the flu vaccine, you may sign and return the paper consent form that will go home with your child.
It is highly recommend that you consider using the online sign up if able- at www.vaccineconsent.com.
Please do NOT do both the paper and the online registration. Thank you!
Information Worth Repeating
Early Release of a Student
Students may not be released from the office after 3:15 p.m.
Once dismissal starts, your child will depart as scheduled by either taking their assigned bus home or exiting the building as a car rider or walker.
In order for your child to be released to anyone other than the parent/guardian, that person MUST be listed on the emergency contact list and present photo identification.
Please provide a Green Note to the office if there is any change to your child's daily transportation plan.
Everyone's cooperation in this regard is important to ensure our students get home safely each day.
Birthdays at LES
Families,
At LES, we strongly support and encourage the recognition of a child’s birthday during the school day. It is an annual milestone in every child’s life that should be celebrated not just at home, but in school as well, where children spend one-third of their day with teachers, classmates, and peers.
For the upcoming year, we will implement the following at LES.
- Students will be recognized during our PA announcements
- Students will receive a birthday pencil and sticker from Administration
- Students will be recognized in the classroom by the teacher and their peers
- A parent/guardian can volunteer as a "Guest Reader" to come in to the classroom and read a book
- A book in the students' name can be donated to the library by the students' family
Deeper celebrations with birthday foods are encouraged outside of the school day.
Volunteering at LES
All approved volunteers should view and verify the CASH Training located on the SMCPS website. If you are already a volunteer, there is no need to reapply.
