Celebrating MLK Jr. Day
Black History Month is coming up in February. Numerous classroom discussions and activities next month will connect to Black history across grades and curriculum. Attention to Black history is not limited to the month of February as we continue affirming that Black lives matter and that we will keep growing as a community of learners committed to being anti-bias and anti-racist in all that we do. We'll share some resources for families to explore and discuss in our newsletter next month as well. We wanted to highlight that coming information as we reflect on Dr. King's legacy and move closer to February.
COVID Reminders
Four key reminders from district messaging about COVID-19:
- Don’t go to School Sick Please don’t send your child to school with ANY illness symptoms, no matter how mild. This includes a runny nose or scratchy throat.
- Required Face Coverings Our districts will continue to require masks in all buildings. Please make sure to remind your child to wear their mask over their nose and mouth at all times indoors (except when actively eating or drinking). Based on CDC mask recommendations (see Considerations for Children), we encourage the use of well fitting and comfortable masks for optimal protection.
- Wash Hands Frequently Protocols and systems are implemented to ensure access to soap, water, and alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol available throughout LOSD school buildings. Schools will prioritize handwashing with soap and water after students or staff use the restroom and throughout the day, as appropriate.
- Distancing Physical distancing of 3 feet will be maintained in the classroom to the extent possible. Students and staff will be asked to be mindful of physical distancing throughout the school day. During meal time, physical distancing of 6 feet will be maintained.
Thanks to everyone for reminding your kids about the importance of following our safety protocols so that we can keep everyone healthy and safe. We'll keep reminding them too!
In-person Volunteering
While we may delay the return of volunteers to campus for a time due to current COVID guidelines from the district, it's a fine time to complete the paperwork required to volunteer with us. See the details below.
Per COVID-19 requirements and board policies, volunteers need to verify the following requirements before volunteering in schools:
- Complete Background Check through school Raptor system
- Sign the form acknowledging knowledge and understanding of district policies (below)
- Show Proof of Vaccination at the school office

Counseling Corner
8th Grade Character Dare: Lovely Lines
When you are in a line over the next few days, choose to make someone’s day better (giving someone a compliment, sending a kind message, let someone else in front of you). What value would help motivate or guide this action for you? What would the outcome look like or feel like if you set a goal to do this every time you were in line?
7th Grade Character Dare: Staying Cool
Choose 1 tool we learned about today and use it at least 2 times before we next meet. Remember, your emotions don’t have to be out of control. You can use these tools anytime you want to be more focused and calm. Which tool will you use? Why? If everyone did the Dare this week, how could that make a positive difference in our school?
6th Grade Character Dare: Sneaky Values
Before we next meet, put the value of KINDNESS into action for someone at this school without them knowing it was you. What is 1 way you could put KINDNESS into action for someone at this school? How could you practice KINDNESS without someone knowing it was you?
Family Character Dare: Gratitude Grams
Create a card or note about a favorite moment you shared with a neighbor or someone that lives nearby. Sign it as a family and deliver it to them. If delivering it in person feels weird, send it in the mail or email. Want to take it to the next level? Offer a date and time to connect for a covid safe neighbor hangout!
