Staff News
I recognize the extreme pressures we find ourselves facing these days. Do more with less seems to be the new normal. More testing, more time out of class, distractions and slow academic progress! The loss of our parent engagement coordinator, the fire, staffing issues, budget cuts, no intervention, new leadership all impact our work. All of these demands and changes make our job a daunting one.
Some would say stay away from calling all this out and keep moving forward! I disagree. Acknowledging the challenges that we face is the first step in being able to address them. We entered this school year with some uncertainty and we had a plan to address much of our need. Because of all the issues we face much of our initial thinking about how to best serve students has been altered.
With all that said here is the good news! We show up every day! We do so with the best intentions and professional knowledge to help our students. Every teacher is using Readers and Writers, we have professional development to support the work, the parents are raising funds to get us what we need to do the work, students are making progress, our school is a safe and inclusive welcoming place to all who walk through the doors. We have an enrichment program for students that is completely funded through donations. SH Cowell is on our side and supportive of our work. Our preschool serves 48 little ones who will have had a year or two of preschool before entering kinder. The FRC provides classes for adults and food for those in need. The support we have is unprecedented in our district!
And most important - All of you make El Verano an amazing place to grow and learn everyday.
I thank you for all your dedication, hard work and love. These are challenging times and I know we will get through them one day at a time. At the end of the day, when I set the alarm and walk out the door of my office I know that everyone in our school did the best they could for our wonderful students and amazing families.
with gratitude and love,
maite
