4th Grade Project Based Learning: How does extreme weather impact food production?
Mrs. Cleary’s class heard from Brendan Moquin who has followed in his great grandfather’s footsteps to become a Cape Cod cranberry farmer. As part of fourth grade project-based learning, students contacted an expert and ask how cranberry production would be affected by a hurricane, drought or flood. Students learned that cranberry bogs use Crisafulli pumps to pull the water out of the bog in case of a flood. When a drought occurs (which happened this year!) the cranberries are smaller and there is less production. Cranberry bogs also use irrigation systems when a drought occurs and farmers even dredge their water reservoirs for more water if they dry up on a drought.
Virtual Field Trip to Plimoth Plantation
Our third grade team solved this problem by arranging a virtual field trip with Plimoth Plantation living history museum.! The Museum Teacher portrayed a resident of 1627 Plimoth Colony, and spoke with a regional, English dialect of the 17th century and wore accurate reproduction clothing to bring the world of Pilgrims to life. The museum teacher shared the Pilgrim story from hiring Mayflower in England, through the journey and the first winter, to Thanksgiving in Plymouth.
