Message from Jeff and Yolanda
Did you know that it is that time of the year for students who will be attending post-secondary school during the 2018-2019 school year to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). On Saturday, LWTHS hosted Champions for Learning staff and volunteers and they assisted families completing their financial aid information. Over 50 families came out to the event and learned about great programs at LWTC while they were going through the process. If you missed or know of someone who missed this wonderful opportunity, there will be another opportunity at Golden Gate High School on October 28th at 9:00 a.m.
Project Explore students have witnessed many community members joining together to help those in need. These actions have inspired the students to make a difference as well. In partnership with Moorings Park, the Project Explore students would like to give back to the community. The plan is to adopt families that are in need. The students are collecting donations in order to purchase necessary items for the families. They will conclude this fundraising event with a field trip to Everglades City to personally deliver items/ gift cards/cash to the families. If you would like to help them , you can donate cash, gift cards or make a check out to Partners in Caring and drop off to Ann Fredette or Bridget Kennedy in 2-205 by 10/20. Check out the video created by the Project Explore students in collaboration with Rick Ponton's multimedia classes.
Coaches' Corner
Coaches' Corner #1
Do you have a few students who seem to forget something they’ve already learned? This can be frustrating for a teacher, right? “I’ve already taught you this!” you might be tempted to say.
If you flip this around, however, you get a different perspective: “You may have taught it, but I didn’t learn it,” a student might respond.
Rather than getting stuck in a blame game, why not apply Carol Dweck’s “growth mindset” approach? Dweck would say, “You haven’t learned it . . . yet, and we both have more work to do.”
Some concepts or skills require multiple exposures, aka practice. For example, anyone ever change a baby’s diaper perfectly on the first try? This article features a brief discussion of why we humans tend to forget what we’ve learned, followed by 5 strategies that will improve your students’ chances of retaining what they’re learning in your program:
- Have students explain what they’re learning to each other.
- Revisit important content often.
- Give frequent, short, low-stakes practice tests.
- Mix up the questions you pose to students – don’t group similar questions together.
- Get visual. Attach images to the concepts your students are learning.
Teaching is one of the most complex and, therefore, one of the most rewarding, professions around. Thank you for committing your expertise to the students here at the Lorenzo Walker Campus
