History
Europeans began exploration, trade, and missionary trips along the West Coast of Africa in the 15th century. The Portuguese were the first to do so, establishing trade but as their power grew they began trading slaves that would go to the USA.

After the Europeans began to settle into Nigeria in 1861 they began to take additional portions of what would be Nigeria were taken through treaties until nearly all of what is today Nigeria was under British control in 1905. They finally gained independence on October 1, 1960.
Ethnic groups
The main Ethnic groups are Hausa-Fulani, Igbo, Yoruba, Ijaw. The Nigerian government has worked out power-sharing arrangements to help ensure that its many ethnic groups have some say in how the country’s natural resource wealth is spent.
