We had a rainy first week back and school -- with more rain due this week! The weather forecast for Santa Monica indicates rain on Monday and Tuesday and again on Friday and through the weekend. When it is raining at school, the morning snack/recess, physical education classes, and lunch are all held inside. Thank you for sending children with warm clothing, and umbrellas or rain jackets if possible. Please keep in mind that when it is raining, the Boys and Girls Club Playground Club and sports practices which are normally held outdoors do not meet. Those programs endeavor to contact parents directly to remind of the need to pick up children at the end of school. All other childcare programs,, afterschool enrichment programs, Ballet Folklórico and Mariachi are held indoors and continue to meet as usual during rainy days.
Please make sure that that the emergency contact information you have shared with the school is up-to-date. We use automatic dialer systems that send phone calls and emails to families in order to disseminate routine information like El Semanario and school notices. But we use those same systems to send Covid exposure notices, and any emergency messages that may arise. These dialer systems draw information from our Student Information System (Aries), so that is why it’s important to keep your emergency contact information updated and send any changes to Melina Garcia (melinagarcia@smmusd.org). Simply letting a PTA Room Representative or classroom teacher know of changes does not get those changes put into Aries. Additionally, if you have shared custody of your children and the situation or court orders change, please make sure to notify Melina so we can update your child's records.
At the end of last week we bid farewell to Kim Santana, long-time coordinator of CREST programs at Edison, as she and her family are moving out of state. The CREST program is operated by the City of Santa Monica and Kim has been the face of the various CREST programs at Edison for many years. She has been a great partner and steady and kind leader, working with hundreds of Edison students and families. We thank Kim for all her contributions to the school and will miss her dearly. CREST has made provisions for an interim coordinator (our former PAS Alex Morales) and will be hiring a new person to be the CREST coordinator at Edison.

Health and Safety / Salud y Seguridad
Health Precautions
Thank you for using the weekly home tests to screen students and for being watchful for symptoms of Covid, RSV or Flu. The testing is very helpful in detecting Covid infections even when symptoms have not yet appeared. Several students who contracted Covid over the holidays stayed home and did not expose others because they used their home test kits. We continue to send antigen home test kits home each Friday.
When there are students who come down with Covid they are placed on home isolation. And if they have potentially exposed close contacts (classmates), we send families a notice. If your child was a close contact but does not have symptoms, they DO NOT need to quarantine but are required to take the following steps to reduce the risk of spreading COVID COVID-19 to others.
- Monitor symptoms for 10 days. If your child develops symptoms, you need to test immediately. If positive, contact Melina Garcia (61-348 or melinagarcia@smmusd.org) and follow isolation guidance at ph.lacounty.gov/covidisolation
- Wear a highly protective mask around others indoors, except when eating or drinking, for 10 days after the last date of exposure.
- Test with an FDA-authorized viral COVID-19 test (e.g., PCR or Antigen test, including at home tests) within 3-5 days since the last date of exposure.
- Students with a mask exemption may wear a face shield with drape at the bottom or must test once between days 3-5 and once between days 6-9 to remain on site.

Assessments
Edison students continue taking the Renaissance Star assessments this week. These are mid-year diagnostic assessments in reading and math and give us another measure of student progress and needs. Your child's teacher will let you know the days the assessments will be administered so you can avoid scheduling any appointments on those days. Unless your student has an IEP or 504 plan with testing accommodations, these computer adaptive assessments are delivered in the classroom by the teacher. For those with accommodations, assessments may be held in a separate, small group setting.
Assessments that are given 1:1 require that teachers step out of the classroom and meet with children one at a time. For those assessment days or half days, we have made arrangements with a substitute teacher to cover the class. In January, Kindergarten teachers will be subbed out for two half-days to administer the Kinder District Math Assessment. K-3 teachers are also being subbed out one day to complete individual reading assessments with their students.
Edison Participates in the American Heart Association's Kids Heart Challenge
The Kids Heart Challenge kicks off at Edison on January 11th. Please go to http://www2.heart.org/goto/edisonsmmusd or download the free “Kids Heart Challenge” app and register your child. Help your class win! Thank you for empowering our students to have happy and healthy hearts, while helping those like Alexa with special hearts!
Our goal is to have 100% of families join the team and learn Hands-Only CPR through Finn’s Mission! CPR can and does save lives! The survival of Buffalo Bills NFL player Damar Hamlin was due to speedy and correct administration of CPR. Check out Life's Essential 8 at the link below for tips to share with children and adults on better heart health.
SCHOOL INCENTIVES:
- The class with the most students registered will get a popsicle party!
- Any student that completes Finn's Mission will get to silly string the coaches!
- When 200 students register, we will unlock a Jersey/Sport Dress Day for the whole school!'

Since Edison is a Dual Language Immersion program, we tend to try and enroll older children first so they have some of the developmental skills ready to support their growth in two languages when they start Kindergarten. Come and learn more about Seaside and see if it's a good fit for your family. Two information sessions are available: Wednesday, January 18 from 6:00-7:30 pm on the Edison campus and Monday, February 13 from 6:00 - 7:00 pm via Zoom. To sign up for an information session, use the link below. Please share this information with any friends, family, or neighbors that may have preschool age children and help us identify the next generation of emerging bilinguals!
