Hallway Happenings PHJH Edition
How One Small Act of Kindness Changed Everything For Two Teams
Good Evening Patriots,
I hope you all enjoyed your weekend and are ready for this last week of February, and making plans to come in for our last Focus Friday of the term from 8 -10 AM this week if you are in need of some extra time and help to get caught up. Remember that Term 3 ENDS two weeks from Friday.
This week I stumbled across this video and found myself all choked up by the simple act of kindness two boys showed an opposing team, for no other reason than because they felt compelled to do something kind for someone else. It got me thinking of a conversation I had with one of our office TA's last week, and the large group of students that came and volunteered their time to help with the Pathways Preview night.
In the first conversation with our TA, I listened as she explained to me that one of her classes had made some posters all geared towards supporting taking better care of our bathrooms to make life better for not only our school, but also they are specifically marketing towards taking better care of Devon our Building Operations Manager. They were not forced to do this and they weren't told of any rewards for doing it either. They just did it as a kindness project to try to help improve life for Devon. Keeping a building the size of ours clean and running everyday is no small feat, and Devon does it with meticulous attention to detail, never asking or for or expecting any accolades in return. The kids taking the time to give much deserved accolades will not go unnoticed.
The second unsolicited student kindness that gave me goosebumps this week was watching the sheer number of students there were willing to not only show up for our Pathways Preview Night but were with out question INSTRUMENTAL in making the night a huge success. When we were asking students if they would come, our pitch was: " We are looking for some students to come and perform and be in the booths for the night to tell people how cool PHJH is, and all we can offer you is pizza and soda." I was fully prepared to have the students tell us they were too busy, or that they were not interested, but they did the exact OPPOSITE and were super excited to come and help.
They showed up and talked to families, handed out fliers, performed, and many of them even stuck around to help clean up. Watching the younger kids talking to our PHJH kids was nothing short of precious. The excitement and joy in the room was palatable, and I have a feeling after watching them they would have done it without even having the offering of Pizza to sweeten the deal. ❤️
I think in life some, but not the majority of us, won't have the means to be able to buy someone a new car, give a full ride scholarship to a student that otherwise wouldn't be able to attend college, or send some well deserving family on an all expenses paid vacation. We can however, for the whopping cost of zero dollars and zero cents each day, be the hero for someone in so many different ways.
This last week... A large number of Junior High aged students made this little dot on the map at 4558 West Patriot Ridge Drive exponentially brighter, just by being kind enough to do things they didn't have too, but were our heroes for the because they were willing to.
As Always Patriots

Buenas noches Patriotas,
Recuerden...

February Is Black History Month Lets Learn and Celebrate Together
Bessie Coleman (1892-1926)
Despite being the first licensed Black pilot in the world, Coleman wasn’t recognized as a pioneer in aviation until after her death. Though history has favored Amelia Earhart or the Wright brothers, Coleman—who went to flight school in France in 1920—paved the way for a new generation of diverse fliers like the Tuskegee Airmen, Blackbirds, and Flying Hobos.

Gordon Parks
Parks was the first African American photographer on the staff of Life magazine, and later helped found Essence. He also was the first Black writer and director of a studio film, and his second movie, Shaft, helping to shape the blaxploitation era in the '70s. Parks famously told Life in 1999: "I saw that the camera could be a weapon against poverty, against racism, against all sorts of social wrongs. I knew at that point I had to have a camera.

Who Has Earned a New Belt This Week In Band Karate?
🎶 A word from Ms. Leach 🎶
I think some band students were taking a breather from all the hard work they put into the first few weeks of band karate, but we had a few amazing beginning band students push through and earn some more belts for Weeks 4-5. Congrats, everyone! Also, a special congratulations to Neil Schorr for earning EVERY SINGLE belt in the band karate program! Neil is a talented trumpet player in our beginning band and put so much enthusiasm into earning all his belts. He's so talented that he's even restarting band karate using the same pass-off exercises in the Band 2 class! Way to go Neil!!

🎶 Unas palabras de la Sra. Leach 🎶
