UNSOLICITED FEEDBACK FROM A SENIOR
Throughout my four years of being at this school I have encountered a variety of different schedules. In my opinion I believe that this power hour schedule has had the biggest positive impact on this school and the student community. What Power hour incorporates is an hour long lunch, however teachers have 30 minutes to help students with D’s or F’s for that class. For example if a student had a 59% they would spend 30 minutes in that class to gain help and to benefit their grade, while the next 30 minutes is their lunch time. For students that don’t have failing grades they are allowed to have a hour long lunch. This also gives students the availability to make up a test, quiz, and classwork that would normally have to take place after school. I have talked to some fellow students and staff members about their opinions on power hour and these were some of the responses. A teacher says “Power hour is an amazing thing because the people who genuinely want to better their grades will come in and that’s what makes me like it. Who cares about the failing kids because they aren’t putting in the extra effort so why should we". A students says “It only applies to ‘dumb’ kids that probably don’t want to make it pass high school”. While an other student says “I like power hour because it makes me want to work harder so I can have an our lunch". I understand that it is hard to keep track of where all students are going however I feel that keeping power hour benefits the students more then previous years schedules.
My thoughts about the way the schedule for the mid-terms is that it isn't that effective. I've had a couple of teachers who have said to just go to both lunches, teachers that give us work or "fun" worksheets that are not helping us prepare, and I've also had teachers where we just sit there and do nothing. I think that what was trying to be accomplished was a good idea but I don't feel as if it is giving us as students the preparation that we needed. But at the same time in all of my classes we started reviewing for our mid-terms mid-week last week, so it's nice to not feel overwhelmed with more work; however the extra 30 minutes for every class is nice for making up missed work.
