Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit at Texas Childrens Hospital - Schoolwide Project
Titan Families,
For those of you that were here last year, you may remember my family taking donations for Texas Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. If you are new this year this is why: This is the story of a tragedy that my family faced in October/November of 2015. My wife and I lost our daughter, Lilly, when she was 5 days old due to a genetic mutation that we previously didn’t know about. The staff at Texas Children’s hospital and especially the NICU nurses were so wonderful to us that we wanted to do something to give back to other parents who are currently going through the same rough time that we went through.
For the past three years, my family has put together bags of items that would help to make the time for other families in the NICU just a little bit easier. While we were lucky to live close to the hospital, people come from all over the country daily to have their child helped at TCH. This usually means they have little to no family support nearby and are staying in a hotel or at the Ronald McDonald house. When your child is in the NICU, finding time to get even a granola bar seems so daunting, let alone a meal. Your days are filled with consults, tests, crying, decision making, and various other things that no parent of a newborn should ever have to do.
Last year, we were able to put together 120 bags and we are hoping to increase that amount even more this year. We donated them on Lilly’s birthday in memory of her. If you want to help, I will be taking donations through October 25. You can bring them to the front office my room (112). Here is a list of things that we put in the bags last year (most were travel size):
- Toothbrushes/toothpaste (travel size)
- Shower gel (travel size)
- Soap (travel size)
- Hand sanitizer (travel size)
- Shampoo/conditioner (travel size)
- Combs/brushes (travel size)
- Deodorant (travel size)
- Lotion (travel size)
- Snacks (protein bars, granola bars, peanut butter crackers, chocolate, trail mix, goldfish – basically anything that could keep you going for a few hours that didn’t need to be refrigerated or heated up).
NEW THIS YEAR: Board books that parents can read to their babies (Brand new books only, please)
Thank you so much for your support last year and thank you in advance for helping to make this a successful project to honor Lilly.
Thank you,
The Krantz Family
