Flu

Influenza- contagious disease caused by virus, strains A, B, C- A and B are worse. The flu virus is tiny particles that you cannot see that enter your body.

Healthy or Sick?

Healthy-
• Supply blood with oxygen
• Get oxygen to all parts of the body
• Oxygen gets to the body through mouth and nose

Sick with the Flu-
• Mostly affects lungs making it hard to breath
• Nervous system is affected by causing legs and knees feel week or shaky


Target

-more than 200,000 people have to go to the hospital in the 1990's

- more serious with babies and elderly

- not specific to a certain race



Onset


spreads when someone coughs or sneezes


- flu started in China with ducks, pooped and pigs caught it, farmer caught it from pigs and spread from there


Prevented:

- preventable by covering mouth and nose

- staying home when sick, don't touch your mouth, eyes or nose

Diagnosis

-Hard to diecnos doctors will run blood test

-Suddon fever

-Weakness

-Aches

-Pain

-5%-20% of people get the flu each year

-Vomiting

-Diarrhea

BLOOD TEST

Signs and Symptoms

muscle aches

- weakness

- pain

-Fatigue,

-Dry Cough,

-Fever,

-Body aches

-Rare or Mild Headaches

-Some times Nausea, and Diarrhea


- infects the cells

- spreads when someone coughs or sneezes

- preventable by covering mouth and nose

Treatment

vaccination recommended to prevent it

- amantadine and rimantadine- if given within 2 days of symptoms can reduce length and severity of the flu

- rest

- fluids

- treatment of symptoms

-No touching eyes,mouth,nose



Prignosis

lasts 1 to 2 weeks

- can lead to pneumonia or bronchitis

- most people do not die from it

-Most commonly Babies die from the Flu

Conclusion

-I had the flu once,it was horrifying and now to prevent getting the flu again I take the flu shot every year.

-I know several family members that have had the flu.

- I know a teacher that had the flu


- I know many students and friends that had the flu.
