Headlines
This strategy can assist students to capture the essence of a lesson or concept. It can be a good one to use at the end of a session to check for understanding of the key ideas. You ask 'if you were to write a headline that captures the meaning of what we are talking about - what would it be?' This headline might change depending on what part of the learning unit you are doing. Displaying these changing headlines makes visible evidence of their learning.
Concept Mapping
Brainstorm all the ideas and topics that come to mind on separate pieces of paper or sticky notes. Then arrange them so that there are connections.
