North Glendale Family Update

November 21, 2021

Good morning!

This past week we had so many wonderful, community building activities!

The Sound had their first performance since 2019 and our very own NG turkey's trotted down the streets of Glendale for the first time in 3 years! (Covid 2020, and a rain-out 2019!) . Additionally, the kids collected food for Kirkcare and change for the Humane Society and the NG PTO Beautification Committee spruced up our outdoor spaces.

Community and giving back...great lessons for all of us!

We will announce the winners of the PENNY WAR and the Kirkcare Food Drive (vs. Bristol Elementary) on Monday! We will be sure to emphasize to the kids that the REAL winners are of course the Humane Society of Missouri and Kirkcare. Many thanks for YOUR support of both of these fundraising efforts.

My best for the long holiday weekend!

Have a great week and please call or email if I can be of service!

Cold Weather is Coming ~ yea!

As most of you will remember from last year ~ we go outside for recess and other activities in just about any weather...including cold and snowy! (Remember that first snow last year??)

I am a big believer in fresh air and resetting via a trip outside, even if it is just for a quick run around the track. Please plan ahead as we do not have accommodations or supervision for kids to stay inside. The kids learned last year that it pays to have clothes in their backpacks ~ especially socks and pants ~ and that winter gear like boots, hats, gloves and scarves make the outdoors time more fun. If you need assistance with any winter clothing, please reach out!

KSD STEAMFest Prep with the NG Sacks of Science Team

Sacks of Science - In the coming weeks, each student at NG will bring home a science experiment to complete. All supplies will be provided, and it’s a great way for students to explore their interest in STEAM. Once your child has completed their experiment, be sure to send the data log worksheet back to school. Students can use the sacks of science experiments as a guide to participate in STEAMFest. More information to come.

STEAMFest – The STEAMFest Science Fair is Kirkwood School District’s annual science fair that takes place in the third quarter and is a qualifier for students to participate in the St. Louis Science Fair. Applications are due December 8, 2021. Science projects will be due February 16, 2022.

The science project application required for upload consists of the Research Plan and Safety Form. Additional formats (including word) are available on the KSD’s STEAMFest Science Fair webpage. Our NG STEAMTeam is working to provide further guidance on the application submission process in hopes of simplifying it - stay tuned.

In the meantime, consider supporting your student in completing a science project this year and help them choose a science project topic. Project ideas may come from subject material your student is learning in class, or students may want to visit science fair project websites like Science Buddies.

Once a topic is chosen, review the STEAMFest project categories with your child to determine where the selected project falls: Animal Science, Behavioral & Social Science, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Dental, Earth and Planetary Science, Fire Safety, Engineering: Electrical and Mechanical, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering: Materials & Bioengineering, Energy & Transportation, Environmental Science, Mathematical Science, Medicine & Health Science, Microbiology, Physics, or Plant Science. You can also identify what type of project they plan to complete: Experiment, Collection, Observation, or Maker Division. See attached PDF and the KSD STEAMFest webpage for more detail.

This opportunity to engage in relevant, hands-on, real-world experiences unlocks confidence and capability within our young students. The STEAMTeam is here to help and support.

Please reach out by text to Erin Jearls (573-247-2125) if you need any support navigating the application process or selecting a project with your child.
