A weekly update from Carleton Middle School
Red Ribbon Week
Next week we are doing Red Ribbon Week. It is a fun week where we dress in different themes on different days to spread awareness about the negative effects of drugs. We will also take some time to watch a video of a surfer who overcame hardships and struggles of a tragedy without resorting to "self medicating" with drugs or alcohol. It should be a powerful and positive week at Carleton!
Tuesday, 10/23 - "Red-y" to be Drug Free - wear red
Wednesday, 10/24 - Hats off to being Drug Free - wear hats
Thursday, 10/25 - Give Drugs the slip - wear slippers
Friday, 10/26 - Team up against Drugs - sports wear clothing
Monday, 10/29 - Wild about being Drug Free - crazy hair day

Thanks to our Student Council members for providing this information and opportunity for our students.

Costume Guidelines
Hello Carleton Families,
Halloween is fast approaching and many students and parents have asked if they will be allowed to dress up for Halloween. We will be allowing students to dress up, as part of Red Ribbon Week, provided that their costume follows the school dress code. Below are some guidelines:
*Bare midriffs, stretch pants, exposed undergarments, etc. are not appropriate for school.
*No face paint that makes it difficult to identify a student or masks should be worn.
*No props or look alike/fake weapons.
*Hats, tiara's, and other head wear are permitted but students must be able to take them off in class at a teacher's request.
*Costume selection should be in good taste and appropriate for school.
*Creativity is encouraged...I heard Mr. Kausch is going as an idiom (something to remind the students to learn and better comprehend figurative language).

Lee's Lingo
A Journal of the American Medical Association study found that 16% of students in grades 6-10 have been physically, verbally, or psychologically abused by a bully. The National Education Association estimates that 160,000 students skip school each day because of something said by a classmate. October is National Bullying Prevention Month in Warren Consolidated Schools and Carleton is doing its part to help educate our students on this serious topic. To culminate this important topic, Carleton will be bringing JET theatre to our school on October 31st. JET is one of only two professional equity theatres in Oakland County, established in 1989. JET’s Youth Education Services (JET/YES) is an educational outreach initiative developed for school-age children that has reached over 500,000 youngsters. They will be performing a play for our 7th and 8th graders called “SHAME”. “SHAME” is a powerful play that covers the topic of cyberbullying. Some of the content is mature as it talks about suicide.
If you would like to opt your child out of this presentation please contact Mr. Lee or one of the counselors (Ms. Lane/Ms. Lenz) at 586-825-2590. Together with parents, students and staff we will take a stand against bullying. Choose kind and compassion, it matters!!!!
