MMPS OVERALL WINNERS OF 2022 LIGHTNING CARNIVAL
MARY'S MOUNT OVERALL WINNERS OF THE 2022 LIGHTNING CARNIVAL
Congratulations Mary's Mount on taking out the 2022 Year 5 and Year 6 regional Lightning Carnival at Maida Vale reserve today playing netball , football and soccer.
We are so proud of the sportsmanship and maturity all of our students showed today. Your enthusiasm and energy saw 3 of our 4 teams win undefeated.
A huge thank you to our parent volunteers who assisted with coaching, scoring and supporting our students on the field and court side. The day would not have been possible without you all. It was also wonderful to see so many parents who had come along to cheer and encourage our teams.
Thank you also to the students who umpired all the games today from Mazenod College WA and St Brigid's College
Well done Year 5 and Year 6 students!
PRINCIPAL'S NEWS
Dear Parents and Carers
Mrs Merrells and I shared a well-being morning with a group of interested parents on Wednesday of this week. It was an opportunity for us to share the progress we are making as a school to achieve our goal of developing a Wellbeing Strategy at Mary’s Mount Primary School.
MARY’S MOUNT WAY 2 WELLBEING
Our Achievements to date
· Daily fitness – whole school approach
· Embedding the Highway Heroes program throughout the school
· Connecting academic achievement in numeracy with rigor and grit.
Where to next
· Introduction of prayerful moments throughout the day (watch this space)
· Restorative conversations to support positive relationships
· Exploring character strengths in ourselves and others
· Development of our Wellbeing framework to share with the community.
This is important to us as a school because a strong sense of well-being provides children with confidence and optimism which maximises their learning potential. It encourages the development of children’s innate exploratory drive, a sense of agency, and a desire to interact with others.
SACRAMENT NEWS
On Sunday 19 June our Year 4 students received the Body of Christ for the first time. Our Holy Family Parish was bursting with family and friends who shared in this joyous occasion. We thank Mrs Karlie Meadows, Mrs Sinead Muscat and the Catechist team for our parish for preparing the children to receive this Sacrament.
Details on how to order the photos from the First Eucharist will be emailed to families early next week.
STAFFING TERM 3
We welcome Mrs Leech back and wish Mrs Muscat all the best for her long service leave. Mrs Muscat will be back with us in Term 4. Mrs Leech will be the line leader for Year K-2 and Mr Smith for Year 3-6.
EVACUATION DRILL
Your child may have come home this week and let you know that they heard a different alarm bell ringing at school. The reason for this is that we conducted a routine Evacuation Practice Drill at Mary's Mount Primary School. The purpose of the practice is for the children and staff to be familiar with the procedure if we ever were put in a situation where the school needed to be evacuated.
The children were calm and the staff worked with the students to understand why we needed to have a practice during the school day.

EARTHCARE NEWS
Kaya everyone,
It is with great joy to be letting everyone know that we have recently been awarded Level 2 Certification from Catholic Earthcare Australia. As part of our Catholic Earthcare Schools Program we had to collect evidence and complete an Earthcare audit to submit for assessment to attain this level. This certificate acknowledges the ecological dialogue our school is undertaking through our commitment to the whole school, student -led ecological change and action, in line with the goals of the Laudato Si' Action Platform.
Recently we reviewed our MMPS Earthcare Vision:
At Mary’s Mount Primary School our Earthcare Vision is to create a learning environment for our students, staff, Parish and community to have opportunities to see, hear, feel, and experience action towards the seven Laudato Si goals. We lead by example to encourage all our stakeholders to create transformative change ecologically, socially, and spiritually.
Next term we have planned some wonderful Earthcare opportunities for our students and families to be involved in. Further information will be announced soon.
Our wonderful Mr Sorgiovanni and his Year 6's have been busy preparing and will be presenting a Laudato Si' themed school assembly this Friday to our whole school. Please feel welcome to join us at 8.50am Friday 24th June to watch and enjoy their assembly item.

SOCIAL WORKER CORNER
I was reading an article by Maggie Dent this week where she shared some quick and easy tips to help reduce tension and create some calm in our homes. As we are heading into the school holidays, I thought I would share with you some of these tips which may help to create a calmer more mindful school holiday period.
- Take three deep breaths often – this extra oxygen is good for calming the brain and, if done often, your kids may copy you. Enjoying three deep sighs is also a fabulous way to trigger serotonin.
- Stop striving to be a perfect parent – good-enough, imperfect parents can raise awesome children.
- Routines and habits help the brain make less decisions, which means it is less stressed – so set up clear routines around mealtimes, bath times, bedtimes and getting ready in the morning.
- Playing music at home can trigger positive neurochemicals. Play music that calms, or nature sounds. My sons listened to a lot of Enya! There are many other choices and playlists with online streaming.
- Music that makes you want to dance will lift energy and create dopamine instantly.
- Spontaneous dancing is a great stress buster – and it even works with moody teens!
- The smell of slow-cooking food like soup, curry, roasts and bread can trigger feel-good endorphins.
- Take your kids outside – fresh air and nature will calm everyone.
- Safe touch soothes most of us – it seems the busier we become the less we touch lovingly. Gentle tickles on the ‘tickle spot’ – high up on the back – is a quick way to trigger serotonin – anywhere and anytime!
- Start speaking to your kids the way you speak to your best friends. Also try a gentle whisper into a child’s ear rather than a loud voice.
- When you find the endless commanding, demanding, nagging and giving consequences is not working – try something new – try kindness. Kindness triggers all the positive neurochemicals – and lowers stress while lifting the love.
Remember it’s OK when you are struggling with stress to excuse yourself to the bedroom for some calm-down time. Ensure you have good quality fruit and nut chocolate hiding in your wardrobe for such an emergency (after all, it has fruit and nuts so surely it’s a health food?).
Just doing one thing a day will make a calm difference.
