The New Sequoia High School
Distant Learning School Year March 2021
From the Principal:
Greetings Sequoia students and families. Welcome to "The New Sequoia High School." I want you all to return back to school because you are missed. You are the ones who give life to the classroom. Your voices are the music in the hallways. Your laughter and sadness are the rhythms that keep a beat on the campus, but most of all you give purpose to us as educators. As COVID 19 positive counts decline in our county, it is becoming likely that we have the opportunity to bring you all back to in-person instruction. I know that on March 13th it will be the one-year mark since we last had a traditional school day, and soon after we entered into one of the worst pandemics in our time period. This past year has been a long and difficult year for all of us, and for some of us, it has been much harder with the loss of a loved one or the financial hardship of this pandemic. Every day I go to my knees in prayer for all those who are struggling, for those who have lost their lives, and for an end to this pandemic. I have a strong faith that this situation will pass, but our current job is to do everything within our power to follow all safety measures, stay connected to school, and find ways to keep motivated. If we are given the opportunity to return to campus, it may be the week before Spring Break, after Spring Break, or we may not return until August. Either way, I want to make sure that we are ready for your return. The teachers and staff have been working hard for the day we can have students all back on campus. This Newsletter will provide students and families with key information that will support our transition back to school. Your cooperation and following the school's guidelines will ensure that we are successful in our transition back to in-person instruction. In addition, students, please check-in with your Homeroom Teacher and your "email" for other important information.
Together we stay Sequoia STRONG

Students its time to Shift this School Year to a Higher Gear
To Return to In-Person or Stay in Distance Learning
In-Person Instruction: If you choose to come back on campus, you will be placed in a Hybrid Schedule and be on campus all day twice a week. You will not be Zooming, in the classroom, your teacher will be teaching the live class. However, you will continue to use your Chromebook because we will be about 95% paperless. There are many benefits to being back on campus as well as some challenges.
Distant Learning: If your choice is to be in Distant Learning, you will be placed in Edgenuity classes and you will have the support of one teacher to assist you. You will continue to do all your work via Chromebook on the Edgenuity software. There are benefits as well as challenges with staying in distant learning with only Edgenuity courses.
Whatever choice you make the biggest question you must ask yourself is, "Will I commit myself to pass my classes so I can meet the graduation 220 credit requirement?"
Each Student and Family has signed the Sequoia High School New Student Agreement Please Review "Click on Principal Skinner"

"Daily Health Checks" Before You Arrive to School
If the COVID number of infections continues to drop we might have the opportunity to return to in-person instruction either before Spring Break or after Spring Break or at a later time.
The California Department of Public Health COVID-19 School Industry Guidance was developed to protect the health and safety of our students, families, and employees. Following these guidelines, the Visalia Unified School District is requiring all parents/guardians to conduct a daily COVID-19 health screening on their child at home each day before sending to school. Please click on the COVID-19 Daily Symptom Checker to access the VUSD Daily Check List.

The First Day We Return to Campus: Students, upon your return, you will enter the front gate closest to the Administration building. Once on campus, we will have plenty of designated seating outside. You will all take a seat and I will review the guidelines on how we will enter the Academic Buildings into your classrooms.
Restrooms: We now have plenty of restrooms and way nicer than what we had at the old school site. All of us will respect the restrooms and ensure there is no tagging, drug use, fighting in, or abuse of the restrooms. Once you request to use restrooms, the teacher will notify the supervision staff and they will guide you to the designated restroom in your classroom area.
Classrooms and School Property: Just about everything in the classrooms and on campus is new and VUSD worked hard to secure the funding to provide Sequoia with some of the best classroom furniture and equipment. It will be the responsibility of us all to keep everything well taken care of.
Gum Issue: Every school has problems with gum because it ends up on the concrete and under the desk. Sequoia will work hard not to have that problem. Gum is not to be spit on the ground or stuck under the desk or tables. Please, "I beg of you" to throw your used gum in the garbage.
