September 2023
Dear OIS Students and Families,
I hope this message finds you all in high spirits and feeling accomplished as we wrapped up our first initial days of school! We are definitely off to a GREAT start, and have witnessed so many achievements and incredible efforts by your son and/or daughter already.
To the amazing students at OIS, let me begin by saying how proud we are of each and every one of you. From the moment you walked through the school doors, you brought with you enthusiasm and energy. Your smiles, positive attitudes, and willingness to adapt to new routines have truly set the tone for a successful year!
And, to the supportive and encouraging families, thank you for entrusting us with your child's education. We are excited to see you throughout the school year; however, you will be communicated with immensely through email messages, this newsletter and phone calls. Every month you will receive The OIS Tribune. This monthly newsletter will be filled full of important information, event reminders and dates, Student of the Month winners, grade level information and so much more!! You are encouraged to read the newsletter every month as this is a great way to keep communication from school to home efficient and effective.
As always, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns. Your child's success takes all of us working as a team. Together, we will have an outstanding 2023-2024 school year!
Sincerely,
Julie

As the school year progresses, it is important to take a moment and inform you about the upcoming interim (NWEA MAP) assessment your child will be taking this week.
WHY do we take these assessments? To help every student reach their highest potential, teachers need reliable information about what students know, where their learning gaps are, and whether they are behind or ahead of their peers. The right assessment makes it possible for teachers to offer better, more targeted instruction.
Interim assessments are a valuable tool that allows us to gauge our students’ progress and identify areas where additional support may be needed. These assessments are administered periodically throughout the school year (fall, winter & spring) to ensure that we are on track in delivering a high quality education for your child.
We understand that assessments may sometimes bring mixed feelings about stress, anxiety and most often unease. But, please rest assured that the purpose is solely to guide our teaching methods and offer us a chance to address any learning gaps. The NWEA MAP assessment serves as a snapshot of your child’s academic development and helps us tailor our instruction according to everyone’s unique needs.
For additional information, please see the Family Guide below.
Our teachers and staff are here to assist in any way possible. So please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any concerns or questions regarding your child’s interim assessments or overall progress.
There is still time to register!

We will also be discussing the causes and effects of some of the Earth’s natural changes. We will read different texts in the expository genre. ELA: In 5th grade, we are reading a variety of literature and informational text. We have three essential questions. How can experiencing nature change the way you think about it? How do we get the things we need? Lastly, what are the positive and negative effects of new technology? Students have started their 25 book challenge. We will also work towards synthesizing information from three sources to write an argumentative essay.
Math: Students will begin the first math unit of the year focusing on place value concepts and number sense.
