What had happen-
The explosion took out 90% of the city and killed over 80,000 people, tens of thousands more were killed later by radiation poisoning

An atomic bomb is generally considered to be one based on the fission principal- that is the splitting of atoms.
When an an atomic bomb has gone off, radiation is spread on the ground, effecting the air, water and life itself.
Effectiveness
Just with being in the blast site can litrally scorch your skin off
and the radiation attacks the cells go human and animals.
The development
Early in 1939, the world's scientific community discovered that German physicists had learned the secrets of splitting a uranium atom.
By splitting an atom, it will create an exposition.
Fears soon spread over the possibility of Nazi scientists utilizing that energy to produce a bomb capable of unspeakable destruction.
