MLK UPDATE
Wow - Thank you so much for the blessing bags. They're wonderful. The time, thought, and care that went into each bag is incredible. We are very grateful and know our guests will be blessed by receiving them. I actually had the privilege of giving one out immediately after their arrival. The smile on our guest's face was priceless. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all! CityTeam Chester.

Music Class
In 2nd Grade we get to make and play our own instruments in Music Class. We are very excited to learn about a unique instrument called Puili Sticks, from Hawaii. We need everyone's help though. If you can, please send in any empty, and un-crushed paper towel roll tubes to Music Class and we will have so much fun in the spring making and playing our instruments. At the end of the project, when the sticks come home, they may end up looking beat up, but they are easy enough to recreate at home with an adult's help. Then you can even have your own Puili Stick band at home! Thank you for your help.

Martin Luther King Week of Service
Dear Parents,
The First and Second Grade classes will be participating in Concord Elementary School’s Martin Luther King Week of Service during the week of January 15th. They will be using part of their recess time during the week to make blessing bags for the City Team Ministries Shelter in Chester. This is an excellent opportunity for the children to get hands-on experience helping others in need.
Our Home and School Association is providing thermal socks, adult gloves, and other supplies for this project. Additionally one of our CES families has donated toothbrushes and toothpaste for ALL the bags (We are so grateful for this amazing donation!) If you would like to support this effort, you can send in an optional donation of $2 to school with your child in an envelope labeled “MLK Week of Service” by January 11th. As an alternative to sending in a monetary donation, you can sign up here: http://bit.ly/CESMLKDonations to send in items that will be used to fill the blessing bags. We ask that these donations be sent in by January 11th. Students may leave donations in the box labeled “MLK” in the lobby. At the end of this project, Concord students will make nearly 500 bags for City Team Ministries!
The HSA is also looking for larger donations for the blessing bags (ie...enough hats or drawstring bags for 500 bags). If you know of an individual or company that would be willing to provide large donation (can be company logo) for the blessing bags or have any questions, please contact Janice Moore janice.moore3@gmail.com.
If you are interested in volunteering to assist the students during this event, please sign up on this Sign Up Genius, http://bit.ly/MLK2019vol. Please note you must have your volunteer clearances to volunteer for this event.
Thank you so much for all of your support with this worthwhile event!

PROGRESS REPORT
Our GVSD elementary progress report is updated for the 2018-2019 school year to reflect current trends in education. It remains anchored in a standards based reporting principle where students’ progress towards standards is indicated along with reporting on the Qualities of a Learner. The updated progress report enhances the Qualities of a Learner to reflect 21st century skills and updates academic indicators to be more accessible to students and parents/guardians. Characteristics of an ideal progress report were identified through research on assessment and best practice, examining samples from other districts, and by defining those qualities essential in our own district.
The recent updates were created to achieve different goals. The updated progress report provides more information to parent/guardians, has a consistent grade scale across K-5 via a new rubric, reflects elements of current instructional practices like reading workshop, and will include the level of books the student is reading.
Student progress on each Quality of a Learner and academic indicator will be reported using a 4-point rubric. This rubric is a departure from previously used state reporting language and intended to be more student-centered. The rubric was designed so that grades do not indicate the end of the learning progress. The student score on the rubric informs the student and parent/guardian of where the student currently is on a learning continuum.
A full description of the new progress report will be included in the Elementary Handbook that will be sent to parents when back to school information is sent out.
