Writing in the Computer Lab

Common Core State Standards state that "students should write routinely for a variety of purposes and for a variety of audiences." In the past ten weeks, students have been exposed to a wide variety of genres in the Reading Plus program. For every story they read, there is an evidence-based writing prompt. Evidence-based writing prompts require that students support their responses by citing evidence from the text. Because the demands of grading these writing responses is so great, I will assign the writing prompts to one or two classes a week. Students will be graded using a rubric similar to this one.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.6-8.3

"Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks."

This is a standard that we work on, quite literally, every day. The students in our computer lab are planning, creating, saving their work, loading it into a virtual backpack in Edmodo, retrieving it, editing it, saving it under a new name (are you tired yet?), and finally, posting their work to me on Edmodo. I have been so impressed with their ability to do all of these things so readily, and without complaints. This is what this standard might look like in a typical science class.
