Sycamore Junior High Family Communication
October 13, 2023
We had a wonderful week of connection and celebration here at the Junior High. We were able to connect with families through conferences this past Wednesday. If you weren't able to connect this month, please consider signing up to connect on 11/10 for our day of conferences. The information is below. We also were able to experience & celebrate 3, count them THREE!!!, GMC Championships. We had wins in Tennis, Cross-Country, and Volleyball. Congratulations to our student athletes and coaches who put in the hard work to learn, grow, and teach. Lastly, please check Ebackpack for your child's MAP reports. This is standardized testing we use to ensure progress is made. The next MAP testing will be in January. We use this data in many ways to ensure your child is getting what they need to be academically prepared.
We love partnering with you to ensure the success of your child. Always reach out if you have questions or concerns. Have a fabulous weekend. Go Aves!

Global Conflict: Resources for Parents
We are sensitive to the fact that many families in our community are discussing, and may be directly impacted by, the conflicts happening globally. We must ensure we provide a safe space for all children to learn about current events and process their emotions with their families. If your family is choosing to engage in these discussions, Sycamore has gathered history-social science and mental health resources to support families who may need guidance with helping their children process these current events. Families should also be aware that violent images from the conflict are emerging on social media outlets (i.e. TikTok). Please reach out to your child's school counselor if they may need any additional supports. We appreciate your immediate response, communication, and support this week.

MAP Test Results available in Ebackpack
Students take MAP tests in Reading and Math three times per year to track progress not only throughout the year, but from year to year as well. The results from the September MAP Test are now available in your student's E-Backpack, which you can access through Parent Portal. While these scores are helpful for the staff and administration to determine what supports are needed for our individual students, families should continue to value all aspects of their student's experience at Sycamore Junior High, which includes academic progress as well as the Connections they are making with staff/students, Preparation for college and career, and Experiences likes sports, clubs and activities in class. If you have any questions about their MAP score, please reach out to their counselor.

During the 2023-2024 school year, Sycamore Schools is transitioning to Canvas as our Learning Management System (LMS) district-wide. Teachers are transitioning to Canvas to varying degrees as they familiarize themselves with the platform and its features. As with any new system, there may be a learning curve as educators explore Canvas's different tools and functionalities. We are committed to supporting our teachers throughout this process, and we have organized comprehensive training sessions to help them make the most of this powerful educational tool.
Canvas allows educators to create, facilitate, and present learning through a digital platform. Students can access course instructional materials through Canvas, participate in discussions, and receive teacher feedback. Canvas also provides parent access.
Grading in 2023-2024:
Parent Portal will continue to be the location for graded assignments that result in cumulative, quarter, semester, and yearly grades.
By Default, the Canvas gradebook will not show course averages. Course average grades will be reflected in Parent Portal.
For more information about Canvas, including a training site for families on how to use Canvas, please visit the Sycamore Community School District’s website at sycamoreschools.org/canvas.
Lost and Found
The lost & found is already full! If your student lost a sweatshirt, lunchbox, water bottle or shoes(!), please have them check the lost & found by the cafeteria. If they have lost anything valuable (AirPods, jewelry, etc) have them ask in the office. The Principals recommend students keep high-value personal items like Air Pods at home. We have had 7 students lose Air Pods in the last 3 days!
