Attendance
As we progress through the school year, please continue to remember the importance of school attendance and arriving to school on time. In addition, children who arrive late to school miss the important groundwork that is laid by teachers at the beginning of the day.
The instruction and learning that occur on a daily basis in the classroom is our central mission. Parents who make regular school attendance and punctuality a high priority are helping their children learn to accept responsibility, which is an important lesson for a successful life.
As we work to increase Collins Intermediate’s daily attendance – please continue to support your child’s educational process by limiting the amount of school missed except for illness. Collins Intermediate daily goal is 98.5%.
3rd Grading Period
2nd Grading Period
Our Attendance is critically low!
It is imperative that your child is at school to receive the quality instruction that is necessary to obtain the skills needed for current and future academic success. The state of Texas uses attendance rates as part of the calculations for Academic Distinctions. If attendance continues to drop at this rate, it could potentially cause Collins to lose our Distinctions from TEA. We know illness and family emergencies are unavoidable but please try to avoid any unnecessary absences or vacations.
Hours of Missed Instruction (Early Checkout) as of January 30th = 4229 Hours

The DLPDMC reviewed the comments and suggestions received from staff, parents, and the community and recommended calendar Draft A – Revised.
In his presentation to the Board of Trustees, Dr. Chris Hines, Deputy Superintendent, noted the features the DLPDMC discussed and highlighted the addition of two staff development days during the school year as well as Election Day being a holiday.

Screenagers
Nell Kendall, Nurse
The Montgomery County Health Department is reporting higher flu activity for this area. Please remember if your student has a fever above 100, keep them at home until they are fever free WITHOUT TYLENOL/ADVIL for 24 hours before returning to school. Frequent hand washing is the best way to prevent getting the flu.
If your student is diagnosed with the flu, please notify the school. The school nurses keep track of flu and report weekly to the MCHD.
We are seeing an increase in cases of Flu B at Collins. The symptoms are the same as Flu A:
High fever
Headache
Body Aches
Congestion, cough
Malaise (no energy, feeling bad all over)
Children may also exhibit abdominal pain and vomiting. I am seeing this in the kids that have been diagnosed with it here. It is different than the usual "tummy aches" because they complain of this severe pain, plus have no appetite and no energy. They really look sick. I was concerned about one student having possible appendicitis but the parent took him to the dr. and it was Flu B!
Please be vigilant with hand washing, cleaning, and not allowing kids to share food/drinks. Remind them to cover their coughs/sneezes, preferably with the crook of their arms!
To all 6th grade parents:
There is a state requirement for students entering 7th grade to have the Tdap (tetanus) booster and Meningitis vaccine before the start of next year. Many of your students may have gotten these vaccines at their 11 year old check-ups. If your student did receive them and you did not send a copy of the immunization record to the school, please send it and I will enter the dates in the computer and your student will be all set for 7th grade! If not, I recommend you start making arrangements to have those done before the end of the spring semester, that way you don’t have to worry about it over the summer. Your student will not be able to pick up his/her schedule for 7th grade without these required vaccines.
Thank you,
Nurse Kendall
Welcome back Cobras! We hope everyone had a creative, relaxing winter break! In Mr. Hunt’s art class, we are beginning a unit on photo-realism inspired by the work of Chuck Close utilizing the grid method. Students are working from a reference image of their choice for their piece. With Mrs. Ferguson, students are working on honing their drawing skills using abstract art as their inspiration for their project! Students are learning about shading, value, and composition in their artwork.

We are off to a great start for the new year! Students have their new practice report in their binders for this nine week grading period. Signed practice reports are due every Tuesday.
The CISD Honor Orchestra performed Saturday, January 18,. in the Bock Auditorium at McCullough Junior High. Thank you to our Collins students who were selected for this orchestra for working hard and being part of a great performance.
Our own Collins Honor Orchestra will resume the last week of January. Detailed information will be sent home with your student.
All orchestra students are working on learning solos from the Suzuki book independently and in class. We are also working on learning new techniques and skills.
Sixth grade orchestra students are also working on learning scales and music for a benchmark/audition for Knox orchestra for next year. All sixth graders will play the benchmark music and scales regardless of whether they take orchestra at Knox next year. Students will also have the opportunity to learn additional scales and music as an audition for the top orchestras at Knox.
