Math Recovery
A Year of Small Steps - Weeks 31-33
Take a break and PLAY some math!
As spring weather finally arrives, it's a perfect time of year to PLAY math. Students love secrets and games, so get out your 0 to 100 card deck and have some fun trying out IA3.6 Secret Numbers. Since you only need six non-sequential number cards, it's an easy game to set-up with small groups of students. You can easily differentiate this activity by choosing the right range of numbers and you can extend the game by asking students to name the number before and after each card. Students could be challenged to "fill in" the missing blanks with numbers on sticky notes or blank note cards.
Higher Level Sequences
If you would like to create sets of higher level sequence cards, I have plenty of blank cards to share. You start off the decade and change colors every 9 numbers. Students can order their short sequence and then be challenged to link theirs together. It's been very successful in 1st - 3rd grade classrooms. You can also use these sequences to recreate numeral track activities such as IA3.4 What Comes Next?
IA 3.7 CAN YOU SEE ME?
Younger students might enjoy IA3.7 Can You See Me? which uses large numeral cards to create a hidden picture activity to help students pay attention to the shape of each numeral. It might be fun to create a lift the flap bulletin board or interactive classroom door decoration. Could this be used with older students and double digit numbers with the reveal being horizontal instead of vertical?
Hidden Pictures
If you ever enjoyed hidden pictures in Highlights magazine, here are directions for making your own Hidden Number pictures. You can see the numerals, 1, 2 and the number word "three" in this picture. The 1 is intentionally higher contrast, but you could easily adjust it to meet the level of your class. The directions can be shared with a parent or para who is willing to help you create more hidden pictures!
