Mooresville MS Family Newsletter
April 9, 2018
A Message from Mrs. Robinson
Greetings Mooresville Middle School Families,
The month of April reminds us to be attentive. As we are all winding down our year here at MMS, we are being attentive to what has gone well and what we need to do to ensure we have a strong end to the school year.
As a school we are being more attentive to the social interactions that we are providing for our students. On Friday, April 27, we will have the ZuZu Acrobats perform two shows for all students at MMS. One day in May, we will have an ice cream truck visit MMS, and provide a sweet treat to all MMS students and staff. Our teachers are working hard to differentiate lessons and finish the year ensuring all students are reaching their academic goals. These are just a few examples of how we are being attentive to our students academic and social needs.
If you are interested in seeing a day in the life of a MMS student please sign up for our next parent tour on April 10, 2018 from 8am to 9am. You can reserve your spot by calling the front office. Our Instructional Coach and I will give you a tour of our school and you will have an opportunity to visit classrooms to see what goes on everyday at MMS from 7:30am-2:21pm!
If you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to give me a call.
Sincerely,
Ayana Robinson, Principal
Mooresville Middle School

Science 7
May the Force be with you! 7th grade Science will be jumping into force and motion for 4th quarter. We will review Newton's Laws, and learn graphing for time and distance. Stay well rested, because we will be needing a lot of ENERGY to WORK through this unit. And we will maintain our INERTIA, and keep objects in motion the whole time.
Mrs. Smith still needs a whole lot of clean empty 2 liter bottles for a force activity the last week of school.
Math 7
On March 14 we participated in a web-quest to learn about the important irrational number of pi that we will be using in our formulas.
Please remember to replenish your child's school supplies.

Math 8
Math 1: We are beginning fourth quarter with exponential functions, growth and decay, and comparing/contrasting linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. The students did a great job with their study of quadratics last quarter but we will be continuing a review to keep those skills sharp. Our review focus for the EOC will be connections between linear, quadratic, and exponential functions both graphically and algebraically.
Elective News
Chorus and Theater Arts
Theater Arts students can purchase $5 tickets to see "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" in the Black Box Theater Space at Mooresville High School. Tickets for the April 23 show are available from Mrs. McComas.
Chorus students are preparing for their Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 8. Students and parents should review the Concert & Field Trip Expectations in the McComas Opus #16 (in blackboard).
Reading Enhancement
Reading Enhancement will focus on strategies for nonfiction in Fourth Quarter while continuing our self-selected fiction choices.
Here are a few pictures from our latest inference game. Students worked in teams to solve a matrix and an array. Only a few were able to solve this challenging mystery!
PE and Health
World Language
Students will be working on their last two topics of the semester (School Life and Leisure Activities) before beginning to review for their EOC exam. The exam will be given on May 25. Students will learn more about the exam as time approaches. For the next month, students have access to IXL for Spanish and will be using the site to help strengthen their knowledge of new and old concepts. It will be a great review tool for their final exam.
Exploring Languages:
Students are beginning their Spanish unit of study. They will learn basic greetings and goodbyes, numbers, weather, days of the week/months and more. We will also cover the holiday of Cinco de Mayo. Later in the quarter students will be working on their final project which involves using the site Duolingo, and their language of choice while researching facts on a country that speaks their chosen language. Students should be practicing their language on Duolingo in their free time.

Life Skills
7th grade students studying Relationships and Child Care started the quarter discussing how to identify friendships. The quarter ended with the students starting the Child Care unit which includes how to promote a babysitting business, creating a business card and resume. 4th quarter will start with the students researching and understanding how to care for babies and children.
8th grade students studying Nutrition and Wellness spent 3rd quarter learning about MyPlate, understanding nutrition labels, kitchen safety and sanitation and preparing a grocery budget. During 4th quarter the students will continue to work on planning nutritious meals, reading recipes, and participating in food labs.
Computer Science Discoveries
Careers
In Exploring Careers students get this opportunity through readings, videos, and hands-on activities in numerous different career pathway modules. Students have cooked eggs and a dish they chose in Intro to Culinary Arts. Others have made stop-motion animations using clay in Computer Graphics and Animation. Others are creating plaster casts in Biomedical Engineering or solving crimes in Forensic Science. While this is happening another group will be looking at wind power in Alternative Energy while another is designing fashion in Design & Marketing. Other groups may be programming a robot in Robotics, printing a keychain on the 3D printer in Digital Manufacturing, making sunscreen in Pharmacology, using a laser in Laser Technology or using the brand-new green screen room to film a commercial in Video Production.
Each student has the opportunity to complete at least 3 modules during a semester so within the next two weeks different students will be completing these same activities.
Band
The 8th grade Band Classes are working very hard towards their Spring Concert, which will be Tuesday, May 15th (hopefully this will be in the new Mooresville High School Auditorium) starting at 7pm. Come by and listen to all of the 7th and 8th graders' hard work as we play selections from Beauty and the Beast, and bring some beautiful Rain indoors! In March, they traveled to Wingate University to perform in front of judges, where they were given the ranking of "Excellent"! We are so proud of their hard work and dedication to creating the best music they can, and becoming the best versions of themselves to date!
General Music
The 7th grade General Music Classes have just finished up learning about music video production, and even created their own music videos! We are now moving into a unit about movie music and how different music and sound effects in movies or TV shows can alter the viewer's experience.
