Message from Principal Collins
Hello Parents, Caregivers and Guardians,
Our Student Led Conferences will be held this coming week. I do hope you all have signed up for a time to come and visit with your scholar’s teachers. This is a great time for your scholars to talk all about what they have been working on in school since the beginning of the school year. Our kiddos love to show what they know. You will also get an opportunity to speak with all of their teachers. If you haven’t already set up a time to come to our SCLs please contact your scholars advisory teacher and they will set up a time for you to come.
We will also be celebrating Veteran’s Day with an assembly on 11/8. I would like to say thank you to all who have served or are serving. We can enjoy our freedom because of your sacrifice.
I would like to remind everyone to please use our school parking lot to pick up or drop off your child. We have had some of our neighbors complain of their driveways being blocked and they can’t get out when they need to leave their homes.
I would like to end by saying our scholars are busy learning and growing both socially and academically at school every day. We truly have amazing students and that is because of all of your hard work at home instilling the values of respect, responsibility, and kindness! Thank you for your continued support of Evergreen Middle School.
In Partnership,
Mrs. Collins

Respect of School Property
Over the past few weeks, it has come to my attention that some of our scholars have not been taking good care of our building. They are seeing vandalism in the hallways, stairwells, and restrooms. I want to make you aware of the systems we have in place to monitor these areas, but we can't do this alone. I am requesting each of you to have a serious conversation with your student about the seriousness of vandalism and set clear expectations for how you expect your student to treat your school. Please know that we take this very seriously, any student who is caught vandalizing the school will be held to appropriate discipline, which could include families having to pay for the repairs.
This is what is already in place.
Scholars sign in and sign out when they leave the classroom.
They always have to have a hall pass when they leave the classroom.
If the scholar is gone for longer than 5 minutes admin is called to check and see if scholar is ok.
If there is an issue we will check the video from our cameras. If a scholar is seen in the video during the time of the vandalism they will be held accountable.
Something added to the process. We used to sweep restrooms at the beginning and end of each period or as needed.
Now each period of the day we will do 3 bathroom sweeps- at the beginning, middle and end of each period.
Let me know if you have any questions regarding this process. It will go into place this Monday, 11/7/22.
We will continue our high level of monitoring our stairwells and halls throughout the day.

Grizzlies Stand Tall as IB Learners!
Last weekend, Ms. Collins and I attended the International Baccalaureate (IB) conference in Seattle as part of our commitment to being an IB World School. IB educators from all over the world flew in to learn about the principles and practices of the IB so that we can improve our programs. For this week’s message, I thought I’d share my two biggest takeaways from the conference.
My first takeaway is that an IB school should engage learners in hard thinking. It’s often the case that the person doing most of the work in the classroom is the teacher. As an IB school, it’s our duty to flip this around. When Evergreen students are activated as resources for each other and take ownership of their learning, there is no limit to what they can accomplish. As Evergreen’s instructional coach, I’ll be supporting teachers to design learning routines that allow our scholars to talk and make meaning from the material in the coming weeks.
My second takeaway is that learning becomes “stickier” when students pay special attention to the “big ideas” in our curriculum. Too often, we find ourselves marching through discrete lessons, one at a time, without taking the time to zoom out to look at the key concepts and central questions that hold our curriculum together. The big ideas of an IB curriculum are the signposts – the threads of a journey through the content – that allow students to make connections between all of their subjects. In the coming weeks, I will be exploring how we can make these big ideas a more prominent component of the learning in every Evergreen classroom.
As a parent/guardian, I hope my two takeaways excite you about your choice to send your child to an IB World School. Stand tall, Grizzlies!
