AMCMS Principal's Office
What's Going on in the Principal's Office?!
My Challenge to You
The video above is one of my favorites because it is a real life example of fear of change, taking a risk, and over coming that fear. The change is the girl is moving from a 20' ski jump to a 60' ski jump. Big difference. The skills needed are the same but because of the height and distance everything is different, at least for her. If you listen to her dad in the background he re-assures her of her skills, reminds her of what to do, reminds her of what she has done in the past. Then you hear another little voice...
"The longer you wait you'll be more scared." That younger voice comes from someone that sounds closer to her age, a sister, cousin, or friend perhaps... a peer.
How does this relate to education? I would say this is an increase in rigor for the student moving from a 20' to a 60' wouldn't you? The same skills apply to each, it is just that more effort will be needed for the 60'. There is also the voice of encouragement, support, and reassurance -- the teacher. Then the voice of the peer puts it in a way that perhaps we cannot as teachers but from peer to peer it makes sense. So lets see... we have:
- Skill development
- Increase in rigor (same skills just more difficult application)
- Support and Encouragement from the teacher
- Peer conversations to help things make sense
Sound about right?
How do you structure the learning in your classroom for your students? Do you include these instructional pieces?
Think. Achieve. Succeed.

AMCMS Technology Tip of the Week
There are lots of video creation tools available to teachers today. One that I like to you is called Knowmia. It has several great features. This short video shows you how to track your students work using Knowmia and what an assignment will look like using Knowmia.
