SLCS District Update

Superintendent's Update
Good evening SLCS Families and Staff Members,
It is difficult to believe that there are only four weeks left to the 2022-23 school year. As mentioned in previous weeks, this is an exciting time of the year for a variety of reasons. It is my hope that our staff, students, and families can enjoy many of the events and celebrations that highlight our student’s achievements accumulated throughout the school year. I’d also like to remind our students that the school year isn’t over. Stay focused on finishing strong both academically and behaviorly. That’s the SLCS way!
Information regarding the budget outlook for the school district specific to the 2022-23 and 2023-24 budgets was shared in the Superintendent’s Update in the May 4th edition of the District Update. This link provides a chance to review information that was shared previously. More detailed information was presented at this week’s Board of Education meeting outlining the current budget situation, the future budget outlook, and proposed recommendations to address the deficit. Here is a link to the May 16th Board of Education meeting. The conversation regarding the budget is at the 30:00 mark. The presentation slides shared at the Board meeting are available on the district website and by clicking this link.
I can assure everyone that none of these decisions are easy and all are made with much thought and careful consideration. At the end of this difficult process, I am fully confident that SLCS will continue to provide our students with the quality educational experience they expect and deserve.
Lastly, I had the pleasure of attending a luncheon this week sponsored by the Lyon Rotary Club. The purpose of the event was to recognize SLHS students who made noteworthy improvements during the course of the school year. School staff can nominate students and the Rotary identifies ten students to recognize. In addition to the luncheon, the students received a certificate and a $100 check. This is one of the many quality programs sponsored by the Lyon Rotary Club and a nice distinction for some of our deserving students. I look forward to attending next week’s event recognizing students from East.
SLCS Proud!

Summer Programming - High School
SLCS will be offering high school credit recovery for our current ninth through eleventh grade students again this summer. South Lyon Community Schools is pleased to be able to offer this program again at no cost to families for this year thanks to Federal and State Grant Funds made available to the district for a credit recovery program. Students who register for our summer school program must attend all sessions and pass the course content to earn recovery credits toward graduation.
The high school credit recovery summer program will be held at South Lyon East High School and will consist of two sessions.
Session 1: June 26th - July 25th, 2023 (no classes July 3rd and July 4th)
Session 2: July 31st - August 24th, 2023
Classes will run Monday through Thursday each week from 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM.
Based on our registration numbers, classes may be offered with South Lyon teachers or through our partner, Graduation Alliance. Classes taught by South Lyon teachers will be in-person. Classes offered through Graduation Alliance will be offered in a hybrid format with students required to be on-site in our learning lab at South Lyon East High School to complete their work. This learning lab will be staffed with a South Lyon Community Schools teacher who will be there to assist students.
If you are interested in having your student participate in the high school credit recovery program, please fill out the registration form below completely. Seats are limited and will be filled on a first-come first-served basis. Once all available seats are filled, we will create a waitlist for those students who did not get an available seat in their preferred course.
If you have any questions about which course(s) your student should register for, please contact your student’s guidance counselor. They can provide updated information about which courses your student needs to complete to recover credits needed for graduation.

Online Safety
One of the worst things about having an explicit image online is feeling like you’re facing everything alone. During our SLCS Parenting Series on April 26, our presenter shared that individuals can report online exploitation of children (including misleading words or digital images on the internet) to the CyberTipline. The CyberTipline is the nation’s centralized reporting system for the online exploitation of children. Visit the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children by clicking this link for more information and to access resources.
