Earth Day 2023

Earth Day 2023 is officially Saturday, April 22nd, with this year's theme being "Invest in Our Planet." The theme is focused on engaging governments, institutions, businesses, and the more than 1 billion citizens who participate annually in Earth Day to do their part – everyone accounted for, everyone accountable.

To recognize and support Earth Day, each class will be engaging in an Earth Day activity that students can participate in as a way of coming together in partnership for the planet. This might be a project related to promoting recycling or composting, an outdoor project to help clean up around the school, or even something related to reducing our use of electricity (a "no tech" day, for example). Our Fun Friday theme on April 21st will be "Earth Day Friday!" with students encouraged to dress according to their Earth Day project (for example, their class might be planning an outdoor project so the students may want to dress in clothing suitable for getting in the dirt) or wear Earth tones.

April Fun Friday Themes

· Thursday, April 6 - Throwback Thursday (rumor has it that the styles from 80's and 90's are the best, but any decade is fun to represent on this day!)

· Friday, April 21 - Earth Day Friday! (your child's teacher will share a theme based on their Earth Day activity or students can wear Earth tones)

· Friday, April 28 - School Spirit Day

Take Our Children to Work Day 2023

This year, Take Our Children to Work Day will take place on Thursday, April 27, 2023. Our school district supports this wonderful learning opportunity for students, as it helps show them the value of their education in an interactive environment. It also provides a unique bonding experience with a parent or guardian while helping students discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life.

If your child is planning on participating by attending a place of employment with a parent, guardian or other family member, please complete and return the form on the attached document (hard copies will be sent home) to the school office by no later than Wednesday, April 26, 2023. Immediately following Take Our Children to Work Day, students must bring a signed confirmation (see attached) from the place of employment they attended stating that they participated in a program or attended the work facility on April 27, 2023. The confirmation must list place of employment with signatures from the parent / guardian / family member and a supervisor or other head authority of the employer; without this confirmation the student’s absence will be considered unexcused for the day.

Student Dress Code

With the warmer days finally closer, please keep in mind that all students are expected to follow our dress code. In particular, please note the following regarding tops and footwear:

  • Half shirts, tube tops, open arm holes, "spaghetti straps" or bare-shouldered tops are not permitted, nor are articles of clothing intended to be worn as undergarments (such as pajamas, etc.). Tank tops are permissible; however, arm hole openings must not be excessively loose (in excess of one inch from the underarm).
  • Beach/shower (flip-flops) type of footwear and non-strapped sandals (sandals lacking a strap across the back of the heel)are prohibited due to safety concerns on the playground equipment and stairs.

State Assessment Schedule

The New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) is the state mandated proficiency test for all 3rd - 6th grade students. The assessment includes test items for English Language Arts and mathematics, plus a section on Science for students in 5th grade. This year's NJSLA will be administered on the dates listed below:

  • All NJSLA testing for ELA and math in grades 3 - 6 will be the week of May 8th - 12th and make-up testing will take place the following week.
  • 5th grade students will be administered the NJSLA for Science on May 16th & 17th.

Student Birthday Celebrations

Looking to surprise your child with a birthday treat during the school day? If so, please review and follow the guidelines below:

  • Birthday treats can be purchased directly from our cafeteria using the order form attached to this newsletter. To ensure the cafeteria has ample supply of the treats you'd like to order, we ask that the form is submitted at least two weeks prior to when you'd like the treats to be given out.
  • You may send in treats for your child; however, ONLY prepackaged and sealed products are permitted. Due to a number of food allergies throughout the student population, we can only allow prepackaged and sealed products so that the ingredients list can be reviewed by our school nurse prior to any treats being given out. DO NOT send in any homemade items or loose items such as doughnuts or soft pretzels.
  • Whether purchased from the cafeteria or sent in as a prepackaged & sealed product, all birthday treats will be given out during the student lunch periods.
