Necessary for Some... Good for All!
Supporting Language Learners
Thank you for continuing to collect meaningful writing samples for TELPAS during lessons and experiences grounded in the TEKS and ELPS as part of regular classroom instruction and for keeping these samples in a secure location in your classroom. Please continue to reach out to Jennifer if you or your team would like assistance in choosing appropriate topics or types of writing samples to gather or in the process of collecting them from learners through the March 6th deadline.
We will begin our online TELPAS testing in the Library this week on Tuesday with 3rd Grade and on Wednesday with 2nd Grade.
Here are a few more ways to help create a language-rich, interactive classroom, which is a necessity for our English Learners but beneficial for all!
Step 6: Have Students Participate in Structured Conversations
Structured conversations focus on creating opportunities for learner conversation and discussion. The use of oral proficiency is important because it promotes access to the core educational curriculum and contributes to English literacy development (Goldenberg & Coleman, 2010).
Structured Conversations Give Students:
Practice acquiring new vocabulary
Control of usage and conventions
Comprehension of nuances in the language
Interaction with others in different contexts, such as informal meetings, classroom discussions, and extended conversations
- Opportunities to tell or listen to stories
- Occasion to listen to or provide explanations of academic content
There are many ways to incorporate structured conversations, includingQSSSA from page 70 in your Sheltered Instruction in Texas book. Check it out:
