Weekly News - February 9, 2024
Dear Middlebrook Families
LOVE is in the air at Middlebrook School! The second week of February of each year has been deemed Kindness Week where we actively promote acts of kindness among the residents of the state. We're excited to announce that this whole month at Middlebrook School, we are celebrating Kindness! We'll be focusing on spreading kindness throughout our school community. Below are some images showcasing our entryway bulletin board, revealing how students are actively populating it with displays of kindness. We encourage you to join us in fostering a culture of compassion and empathy by engaging in acts of kindness at home and discussing the importance of kindness with your children. Together, let's make our community a brighter, warmer place for everyone.
As a reminder, schools will be closed on Friday, February 16th and Monday, February 19th.
Thank you to all who have supported our calendar fundraising efforts. Many children have asked for additional calendars to sell and they are readily available in the main office. Sales continue until February 23 and lucky winners will be announced throughout March.

An Important Message from Dr. Semmel
I wanted to share some important information. At the Board of Education meeting on February 6, 2024 the board unanimously adopted a change to the 2023-2024 calendar.
Specifically, we are going to hold school on March 18, 2024 and move the Professional Development day to April 2, 2024. This is necessary because April 2 is the date of the Presidential primaries in CT. Our schools make up the majority of the polling locations and therefore we believe it is both safer and better for the election process if we make this change. I want to thank the Registrar of Voters for bringing this to my attention in a timely manner. The updated calendar is on our website and a link is provided below.
A Message from Nurse Jeanne
Since 1964, February has been recognized as American Heart Month. Please use the link to view more information about how to make sure you and your loved ones are heart healthy.
2024 Tom Thumb and Lavinia Warren Contest Barnum Festival
The 2024 Tom Thumb and Lavinia Warren Competition of the Barnum Festival will be held on Saturday, May 4th at The Discovery Museum in Bridgeport. All 3rd and 4th grade students in the surrounding area are invited to enter the contest. Applications are due to the school no later than Thursday, March 28th. Two winners will be selected to represent Middlebrook School at the competition on May 4th. Please use the link for more information and to apply: Tom Thumb/Lavinia Warren Application
The annual Barnum Festival dates back to 1948 to help support local businesses and honor P.T. Barnum—a world-renowned showman and city leader. The Barnum Festival spans several weeks in an effort to build community spirit, enrich the lives of Bridgeport residents, and give back, culminating in a weekend-long Barnum Palooza that hosts parades, concerts, fireworks, and other family-friendly events. One of the popular events for the children is the Tom Thumb and Lavinia Warren contest.

Grade 2 News
Second grade has been learning about change makers each day in social studies and recording it in their Black History Month books! So far we have learned about Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, Mae Jemison, and MLK Jr.!
Black History Month
Throughout the month of February, our students will be diving into the rich and inspiring history of Black Americans as we celebrate Black History Month!
This month-long celebration provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about the significant contributions, achievements, and struggles of Black individuals throughout history. From civil rights leaders and trailblazing scientists to acclaimed artists and groundbreaking athletes, our our instruction will highlight remarkable diversity and resilience within the Black community.
We encourage you to join us in supporting your child's learning by engaging in conversations at home about the importance of diversity, inclusion, and equality. Together, let's inspire our children to recognize and celebrate the cultural heritage and achievements of Black Americans not only during February but all year round.

Lunar New Year
The Lunar New Year, which is also referred to as the Chinese New Year, begins with the new moon that occurs on February 10th and will last until the following full moon which is expected to end with the Lantern Festival on February 24th. The Lunar New Year represents saying goodbye to the past year to welcome in a new one with endless possibilities. In addition, this marks the transition between the zodiac sign of the rabbit to the "Year of the Dragon" which symbolizes good luck, strength and prosperity in Chinese history. More information can be read here: Lunar New Year for Kids or Chinese New Year

Did you know that your gently worn sneakers could help Middlebrook?
Well, they can and here’s how…Our school is participating in a fundraiser where there is nothing to buy or sell; all we need is your support and your gently worn, used, or new sneakers (children's and adult's)!
Here’s how you can help:
Start in your closets at home and gather as many pairs of sneakers that you no longer want; maybe you’ve out-grown them, they’re out of style, or out of season. Every pair counts!
The sneakers that we collect will help raise money to support our program AND will help our environment by keeping sneakers out of landfills.
We will be setting up a box in the lobby soon, but start saving them now!
