Increase in Security at Westside Coming Soon
Each school in the district will undergo a security upgrade in order to better identify visitors who are in our buildings. Westside Elementary will have a management system with a door buzzer and ID verification. As with anything new, there will be an adjustment period that will take place as we begin using this system. However, I’m sure you agree that it is worth it to know that only authorized individuals are walking the halls of our school. Thank you for your cooperation as we make this transition to improve safety and security for our children and staff. It is imperative that you read the following Q&A section in order to better understand the implementation of this system.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: When will the new system go into effect?
A: The new visitor management system will go into effect April 2018. Once it has been put in place, we will send out another letter.
Q: What time will the school doors be locked in the morning?
A: Elementary school doors will be locked at 8:00 a.m.
Q: What if my child is late to school? Will he or she need to be buzzed in?
A: If your child is late to school, our practice remains the same. You will need to escort them to the office and check them in, which will require you to go through the visitor management system.
Q: Will parents, visitors, and volunteers at the school need to follow the same procedures?
A: Yes. All parents, visitors, and volunteers will need to follow the visitor management system in order to enter the building. To ensure a productive learning environment, visitors will only be allowed to visit classrooms by appointment.
Q: How will visitors who are unfamiliar with the new procedures know where to enter the building?
A: Signs will be posted outside exterior doors directing visitors to the main entrance. In addition, information on how to access the intercom will be posted at the main entrance.
Q: How will school staff determine whether or not to grant access into the building?
A: School staff may use a list of clarifying questions to determine whether the person(s) has a legitimate reason to enter the building. If there is any concern about granting access into the building, school administration will be contacted.
We thank you, in advance, for your patience and understanding during this transition time. We know that it will take a little extra time getting into the building, but we are dedicated to the safety of your children. We appreciate your assistance with this.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me and I will be happy to assist you.
Morning Car Duty
Once it is 8:00 a.m. the morning duty teachers will come into the building. At that time, parents need to drive your child around to the front office and park to walk them in. They will need to be signed in at the office. If you do not see a duty teacher out back, please do not send your student to the back door to knock. It is locked at 8:00 due to our increased security.
We are working to train staff and students to not open doors for anyone once they are locked. We need everyone using the correct entry areas and going through the proper procedures to enter.
Safety for our students and staff is our number on priority. Thanks for your help!
