Higher education in Lithuania

Quotes on education

"Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so." - Douglas Adams

"Education is the most powerful tool that you can use to change the world" - Nelson Mandela

"Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught" - Oscar Wilde

3 ideas that I agree with and 3 ideas that I disagree with

Bright students should not find themselves in one room with those less able. It is true, because this is what makes the process of learning less smooth.

It is bad that the price of studies does not depend on the profession's potential to generate money. I agree with it - a musician that has to pay 20 thousand for his studies will go broke the most likely, because he is not likely to earn that amount of money quick enough.

"If you have money, you just pay up and serve the time". I agree. You should not be allowed to actually buy a degree.

"Registration fee be adopted for all Lithuanian universities and all courses for all students.". I strongly disagree. According to Lithuanian Constitution, pupils that achieve good results have a right to get free education. Any way around this principle would already be an attempt to ignore constitution.

Only students that fail exams should have to pay for tuition - I strongly disagree. Then we would have to boost the minimum requirements enormously. Because nowadays students that do not pass exams are highly unlikely to want to study in a university - 9 times out of 10 they are and want to be a marginal part of society. Universities will not survive with such a minor income paid only by 1/10 of the students that fail their exams, which is a very small part of those who try to pass them.

"There are now 200,000 students in Lithuania.". I disagree - this is not an exact number and there is no word "about".

What are my future educational plans?

I am going to take history, Lithuanian language and English language exams - those are required for the subject that I want to study. If I succeed in exams, I will study political science.

I am going to study in the Institute of International Relations and Political Science

Political science

Last year's entrance statistics

Last year 100 students entered the political science studies that were financed by the state - it required a competitive score of 19.7. 105 students will, however, pay for their studies. They needed a competitive score of 18.08 to enter the institute.
