High School Highlights

Weekly Updates from Big Walnut High School

February 5, 2021

It was a short, but productive week at BWHS! On Thursday, we held our last round of (virtual) parent-teacher conferences for this year. We also held our annual "Educational Options Night" in a virtual format (see below). Scheduling for the 2021-2022 school year is in full swing and our counselors are currently meeting with students to help them make selections for next year.

Next week is a full, five-day week with our (virtual) 8th Grade Orientation and an ACT prep-workshop for juniors among the many happenings we have planned. Please take a look at this week's newsletter to find the important information for your family!

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers, school counselor or the administration if you have any questions or concerns. Feel free to contact the main office at 740-965-3766 between the hours of 7:00 and 3:15.

Educational Options Night

Our Educational Options night exists to help families make informed choices for their student(s) when scheduling for the upcoming year. This event highlights advanced courses (honors and AP), CCP options, elective course offerings and more! Please take a few minutes to check out these resources to see if any of these course offerings or options are right for your student(s).

Scheduling Information for 2021-2022

Believe it or not, scheduling for the 2021-2022 school year has started! We encourage all parents/guardians to have a conversation with their student(s) to discuss their future and what courses will help them accomplish their goals. To help you with that process, we have a variety of resources available. To access the video that was shown to students in preparation for scheduling, please click here. For more information on the courses offered at BWHS, you can access the BWHS Program of Studies. Students were given a packet with information on graduation requirements and a listing of offered courses. If you have any questions, please feel free to see the scheduling tab on the School Counseling website, or contact the School Counseling office.

Seniors--It's Scholarship Season

In-person seniors had a virtual class meeting to find out more information about the Big Walnut Education Foundation Scholarships available to them. Click here to access the video presentation and click here for the information letter that was distributed.

Additionally, the Delaware County Foundation sponsors a number of scholarship opportunities for seniors. Click here for more information about these local scholarships.

CSCC Virtual Open House Options

Please see this attached announcement for information on Columbus State Community College virtual open house options in January and February. This is a great chance for seniors considering CSCC to see if it is the right fit for them. There are also live online options for women and students of diversity to hear about the great opportunities in the fields of logistics, manufacturing, and technology.

Seniors--Do you have your cap and gown?

It's hard to believe, but graduation will be here before we know it. If you haven't ordered your cap and gown, it's not too late...but time is running out. Please click here to see order information from Jostens. Contact them with questions!

Parent Resource

Parenting a teen in today's world is no easy task, so we want to share resources with you when we find them. This link contains several videos about situational awareness for you and your teen to watch and discuss together.

"Teens and University students are at higher risk for a violent encounter. One of the greatest assets you can have to leading a healthy and happy life is knowing how to protect yourself so you can live the life of your dreams." (from prettyloaded.org)

ACT Given on February 23

The state mandated ACT test will be given to all juniors on 2/23. We will give the test at BWHS this year for the first time in many years and only juniors will attend school that day. This is largely due to the safety protocols in place this year due to COVID at both BWHS and our usual testing locations. More information will be coming, but we wanted this date to be on your calendar.

Updates from the School Counseling Office

Scheduling for 2021-2022:

Scheduling for current Juniors has started! Please make sure your student has read through the scheduling information and is ready to make course selections for next year. Additionally, please note that our counselors will be meeting with students to help them with the scheduling process for most of the day. Please be patient with them in returning phone calls and emails as this may take them a little longer during this time.
