California Healthy Kids Survey
The purpose of this survey is to obtain information from the students about their knowledge, attitudes, and behavior about things that affect learning. It deals with such issues as truancy, safety, harassment, substance use, school connectedness, and learning supports. Students will first answer a question about their current learning situation and then be directed to questions appropriate for that situation.
Student participation is voluntary. It is also very important.
This is an anonymous survey. It is designed so that no one can be identified from the data. Students do not have to respond to any questions that they feel could be used to identify them.
All questions apply to this school only.
The results are for the use of the district. CDE and WestEd will preserve the data confidentiality and refer any data requests to the district.
We will be administering the survey to your students during the week off November 13-17. Please complete the consent form below if you want to opt your student out.
Passive Consent Form/Permiso Pasivo
There is also a parent component to the survey. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey to share your perception of the school to guide district and school efforts to promote safety, enhance learning supports, and improve student achievement. Instructions for accessing the survey can be found in this letter (Spanish).

Hanover Survey
Student Survey
Dear Parent/Caregiver:
Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) has partnered with Hanover Research (Hanover), an independent research firm based in Arlington, VA, to explore students’ experiences with climate and culture in the district.
Hanover will be conducting 30-minute interviews with student participants from November 6 through November 22, 2023.
Your student is invited to take part in this research study. You can click this link to access an informed consent form that contains information that will help you decide whether to permit your student to join the study. If you consent for your student to participate in the interviews, please indicate so below.
Once we have your permission, we will contact your student to schedule an interview date and time. Alternatively, your student can sign up by clicking this link:
You also have the option to participate in the interview with your student.
Participation in this study is voluntary, and all participants have the option to remain anonymous. Your student does not have to participate and they can withdraw at any time. In addition, your student does not have to answer any questions that they do not want to answer. Please take time to read the entire informed consent form and ask questions before deciding whether to permit your student to take part in this project.

Reminder from the Nurse's Office
Information from the School Nurse
Gentle reminder regarding casts/crutches/orthopedic devices: The use of supportive devices such as: crutches, canes, wheelchairs, casts, ace wraps, or braces at school requires a WRITTEN physician order specifically stating they must be used at school, from the prescribing physician giving the reason why and length of time the device will be needed at school. Students will not be able to attend school using these devices without a doctor’s note.
Dia de los Muertos
November 1st and 2nd
This week, we remembered and celebrated Dia de los Muertos, a beautiful Mexican tradition that pays tribute to loved ones who have passed away. As we created ofrendas (altars) and shared stories of those who've left us, let us embrace the spirit of remembrance, love, and unity. Special thanks to Mr. Bandy for helping organize this.
