This infographic, released by the Delaware Department of Labor, provides some insight into the impact that the pandemic has had on employment in Delaware.
Weekly Brief
By now everyone should have read the Department of Education's Reopening guidance document. Please review for your particular area and identify key information that will impact your division or school. We will continue to have several conversations on opening the school year. Please pay special attention to the SHOULDS versus MUSTS in the document.
Up Ahead: Summer is in Full Swing
1. Liaison meeting on Monday to discuss our reopening plans.
2. Terri and I will hold 4 virtual staff forums this upcoming week to collect feedback on our current plans regarding a potential hybrid schedule. Please note that there are several details to still work out but we are making progress.
Some other related items:
a. We've asked DPH to train our nurses when they have to screen students
b. We will reach out to each family in some way (I'm open to ideas) to determine if they would send their child to school if we do hold in-person classes. If so, will s/he take the bus, drive, or get dropped off by a family member.
c. The number of hours a student has to have annually, 1032 for Seniors and 1060 for underclassmen, has not changed; however, online learning similar to last Spring will count.
d. In the Spring we had to submit our plans to DEDOE. That is not the case this year.
e. The September 30th count is extended to November. DOE will form a team to help determine the best way to achieve this effort. I think we may need to create "virtual homerooms" where the students check in online each day.
3. Talk with the Superintendents to determine if a post-Labor Day start is necessary to provide staff the opportunity to prepare for a successful school year amid COVID19.
4. Looking to hear from DIAA regarding the start of Fall Sports. We are looking at delaying the beginning of the Fall season to allow for a successful start of the school year. We are also considering the best way to allow certain sports that are currently restricted. This past week we allowed conditioning at all four schools and it seems to be progressing well.
5. The annual Policy and Practice Institute will take place August 5th, virtually at no cost.
6. A couple of us will meet w/ vendors that could potentially lead our district wide Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts

Going Beyond...
#NCCVTWorks for Equity in Action.
Hopefully, you've received your Courageous Conversations book. We will use Schoology to organize our study, complete assignments, and hold each of us accountable. I've organized our study into 7 weeks with a daily reading requirement of 6 to 7 pages a day. You will find this book and our study to be very interactive.
I want to add that this work is a journey that I hope we fully embrace until we are satisfied that the district, each of our schools, and every classroom is curated to meet the needs of every child. This book is just the beginning.
The Schoology site will launch this Monday!
