South Elementary Mustangs
May Newsletter South Elementary 2021-22
Message from the Principal
Dear Families of South Elementary Mustangs,
I’d like to start off our final newsletter of the year by expressing my gratitude for all the support our South families and staff have provided during the last few weeks as we have held many special events, fundraisers, and music programs! Thank you for supporting your children and celebrating with us during these special times of the year! We do still have several events coming up this month in the weeks leading up to the end of the school year including Field Day on Friday, May 13th as well as kindergarten and 5th grade continuation ceremonies on Tuesday, May 24th, which is also their last day of school. The last day of school for 1st-4th Grades is Wednesday, May 25th.
We do have our last round of assessments and data gathering during these first couple of weeks in May and the data we are able to gain from these assessments really helps us to be able to see students’ growth over the school year from August through May. Please continue to prioritize attendance. It is critical that students are in school daily all the way to the end of the year.
At the conclusion of the school year please check the school website if you have any questions during the summer. We update the website with the 27J District Calendar, supply lists, superintendent’s policies, and more so that you can stay well-informed while the office is closed. The final day of office hours will be Friday, June 3rd and we will re-open the office on Thursday, July 22nd. The first day of school for students, kindergarten-5th grade is Thursday, August 11th.
Have a wonderful last few weeks of school and an amazing summer break! Thank you for your help and support in the individual learning and growth of your child(ren) as our partners in their education.
Most sincerely,
Mrs. Puzio
Principal, South Elementary

Atentamente,
Sra. Kristen Puzio
Directora, Primaria South

Dear South families,
Character Education Focus: South Elementary School, along with many other elementary schools in the district, is seeing an increase in behaviors, actions and words that are considered sexually inappropriate. We are seeing more than we have seen in years. Because of this, we will be focusing on teaching boundaries, appropriate touching and language, and 3rd-5th grade will also be educated on sexual harassment and district policies.
Melissa Rippy Allstate Insurance has recently started a new program called Elsie the little free mobile library. You can find it on facebook. It’s an entire trailer filled with free books for kids and adults, and it travels around Brighton. We were so fortunate at South to have them visit us and donate a book to every single student. It was amazing! If you ever need a book for your family, look them up and see where they are! Also, if you want to give back, they are always accepting book donations. I’m sure they would especially appreciate children’s books!
I Matter is a program providing up to three free counseling sessions for any Colorado youth. Youth and their parents can visit the I Matter platform to take a confidential online survey about their mental health and schedule sessions with a licensed behavioral health clinician, primarily via telehealth. All Colorado youth ages 18 or younger—or 21 and younger if receiving special education services—are eligible to receive free services. Youth 12 and older can sign up for counseling sessions without a parent or guardian's consent.
Community Reach Center: 1850-1860 E Egbert St, Brighton, CO 80601. They have Intake assessments for new clients on a scheduled basis: Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Clinical Services provided Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm.
SUMMER SPORTS:
Did you know? Physical activity in general is associated with improved academic achievement, including grades and standardized test scores. Further, such activity can affect attitudes and academic behavior, including enhanced concentration, attention, and improved classroom behavior. Check out one of the following sites to get your student enrolled in a local sport this summer!
