Desertification

Definition: the system by which fertile land becomes desert, as a result of drought, deforestation, or inappropriate agriculture


Why: Naturally can occur due to a drought or human activity.


Where: Sudan; South Africa; other Northern countries of Africa.

Overpopulation

Definition: having a population so large which could lead to environmental deterioration, impaired quality of life, or a population crash


Why: A huge decline in infant and child mortality rates multiplied with a severely high fertility rate.


Where: Nigeria (suspected now until 2050)

Apartheid

Definition: a policy of segregation or discrimination on grounds of racism


Why: When the National Party gained power in South Africa, the all-white party decided to enforce policies racial segregation.

Genocide

Definition: the killing of a large group of people, mainly a particular ethnic group or nation


Why: Conflicts were occurring between African farmers and nomadic Arab tribes.


Where: Darfur, Sudan

Civil Wars

Definition: a war between people within their country


Why: Islamic fundamentalist group, Boko Haram, is waging a civil war against the Christian community and Nigerian government.


Where: Nigeria-Biafran

Disease

Definition: a disorder of a structure in a human, animal, or plant, especially one that creates specific signs or symptoms and is not simply a direct result of physical injury


Why: Noma - children under age 6 get caught in a vicious circle of extreme poverty and chronic malnutrition.

How does a lack of education relate to the problems listed above?

If there was a higher education rate, we could prevent more diseases from spreading and prevent more from forming. If more doctors in the Sub-Saharan area of Africa had a higher education in the medical field, they could find cures and create vaccines for more diseases.

Rites of Passage

Definition: a ceremony or event representing an important stage in a person's life, mainly in birth, puberty, marriage, or death


Example: Rite of Ancestorship; Rite of Birth; Rite of Adulthood

Scarification

Swahili

Definition: Bantu language used as a lingua franca in East Africa and it has an official status in several countries;

a member of people of Zanzibar and nearby coastal regions, descendants of the original speakers of Swahili



Where: Tanzania; Uganda; Democratic Republic of Congo; Zambia; Somalia; etc.

Definition: the custom of having more than one wife or husband at the same time

Definition: a group of Niger - Congo languages


Where: spoken in southern and central Africa, this includes Swahili, Xhosa, and Zulu
