PVE Friday Focus
"You Matter!"
Friday, October 2nd, 2015
We conclude one of our "biggest" weeks of the year with another successful Jog A Thon on Wednesday, Staff Meeting on Thursday and the welcome of over 275 folks to "Grandfriends" in first grade today. Each of you worked hard this week and know you matter!
As shared in our staff meeting, your work in this conference season at meeting with parents, listening to their view on their kids and giving them hope and guidance for the future is a remarkable opportunity. I really mean that, we give hope. Every parent sends us the best they have, they have no choice. We are the professional, the most knowledgeable person in the business of education working with their child. The words we use are powerful, select and use wisely. Prepare for the question you know for sure you will get, what can I do to help my child? Ask your colleagues how they will answer this question. Anyone off the street can say, flashcards, or read more, or just let them play. But, the professional who knows our craft, the true art and science of teaching reading, writing and math will go into depth on the stage of development the child currently is in and how the parent can look for the signs of the next stage of emergent growth. Be ready to give these strategies. Remember, you really matter!
Speaking of YOU MATTER: Allison mattered which she loved on a family to help a transition into school. Lauren and Cathy really mattered when they did a home visit with a sick student. Cheri and Kathy helped kids really matter when they helped to guide them to do a 3D print of a designed model sensor headband to detect neck vertebrae displacement that MakerBot has now requested! Terry really matters as every day our kids trust him to cross the street and don't want anyone else! Kathy really mattes when she trusted her Kindgergarten students and watched them rock out by making their own video newsletter to send home via Canvas! I am noticing the more we trust our kids and the more we trust each other, the more incredible things start to occur in our brick building. The picture above is of our staff parking lot at 2:45 today. Each of you parked in the bus lot allowing for Grandparents to park closer to the school. You Matter! Imagine if we didn't do this.....some grandparents would be walking from Ford Road to enter our school.
As noted, we have cancelled all collaboration meetings next week. This is a gift of time to say, You matter! Your work is important! Trust each other and your kids at new levels. Take time to watch the video above. , You Matter by Angela Maiers.
Going further.....
Below you will find the keynote speech by Jack Gallagher. I referenced this yesterday in our staff meeting. It is a bit lengthy (over 50 minutes) but really good. You will find I "borrowed" a joke from Jack! This keynote will take you fully into the grips of the parent role of a struggling learner. Time and again, we find ourselves, as educators, as the ones who can change lives in this great world.
