ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH
September is Attendance Awareness Month. Regular school attendance benefits the academic and social success of students even during the high school years.
For attendance questions please contact Mrs. Bass.
DID YOU KNOW...
- Regular attendance in 9th grade is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
- A student can fall behind if they miss 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
- 4 or less period absences in a year is considered satisfactory attendance, 5 to 9 is considered a warning sign and 10 or more period absences is considered chronic.
- Missing 10% of school negatively impacts a student’s academic success.
- Regular attendance is a life skill.
- Absenteeism can be a result of something else going on in a student’s life.
- Students who are engaged in extracurricular activities (sports, clubs, drama, band, etc.) have better attendance rates
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
- Make attendance a priority
- Avoid extended vacations
- Stay engaged
- Log into Aeries daily
- Communicate concerns or issues with the school
ACADEMICS INFORMATION
AERIES PORTAL
Logging in and monitoring your student's grades can all be done from the Aeries portal. The importance of this cannot be communicated enough. Parents and students will be able to better partner with the teachers by monitoring students' grades, attendance, and other important information within Aeries.
SVUSD COLLEGE FAIR HOSTED BY RHS
Students and families in all grade levels are invited out to talk with a number of different colleges and universities to learn more about which of them is the best fit for you. This year the College Fair will be held at Royal High School on September 12th. More details will be available soon.
NAVIANCE DAY
Naviance is a web-based platform that helps students navigate their goals after graduating from high school. Few of the helpful tools include; four-year course planner, resume builder, strengths explorer, college search and match, and in some situations students will actually apply for a university through the Naviance platform. Our first of three Naviance Days will be on September 6th during third period.
PSAT EXAM
On Wednesday, October 10th we will use part of the school day to test many of our juniors with the Preliminary SAT (PSAT). The PSAT serves several purposes. It is a practice test to the SAT, provides the school with data to help students determine AP readiness, and it serves as a qualifier for 11th graders to be identified for the National Merit Scholarship.
The window for 11th grade students to register for the PSAT is open until October 5th, or until the first 200 people register. Students who would like to sign up should follow the steps below.
Log into Naviance. Can also access from RHS Homepage.
Click "About Me"
Click "My Surveys"
Click "Surveys Not Started"
Go to "PSAT Sign-ups"
Royal HS will be fronting the costs of the exams for the students who register. There are 200 exams available.
After students register they should stop by the counseling office to pick up the PSAT Student Guide to help them prepare for the exam. Details specific to the exam logistics will be shared as we approach the testing date.
Khan Academy also provides free practice through their online adaptive learning portal at Khan Academy PSAT prep.

COLLEGE OF THE WEEK
THIS WEEK: WHITMAN COLLEGE
Click here for Tuition & Financial Aid Info
Enrollment: 1428
Acceptance Rate: 43%
DETAILS: Whitman has quietly established itself as one of the West’s leading liberal arts colleges. Don’t bother with the umbrella: Walla Walla is in arid eastern Washington. Whitman’s isolation breeds community spirit and alumni loyalty. True to its liberal arts heritage, Whitman has no business program. Combines outdoorsy camaraderie with the slower pace of life in the rural Northwest.
You don’t have to own a Frisbee to succeed at Whitman, but if you’ve got one, bring it along—you’ll find a campus full of friendly students eager to toss it back to you. Though it isn’t well known outside the Pacific Northwest, Whitman offers a top-notch liberal arts education, along with plenty of fun for outdoorsy types. Students are down-to-earth and friendly and feel a deep loyalty to one another—and to their school. “The Whitman community is more supportive and inspiring than I would have thought possible,” says a senior. “Here you can grow and excel to your absolute potential.”
Whitman Student Perspective: “Classes are generally difficult, but in a way that encourages cooperation among students rather than a malicious competition where grades and rank are most important.”
