Succeeding in Middle School
How to Succeed in the Fine Arts Classes
1) Daily practice is like daily toothbrushing. How often is more important than how long. Shoot for 5 days a week.
2) Make sure you practice in a place with the least amount of distractions as possible. No TVs, phones, and people.
3) Follow the practice guide given by Mrs Ledesma to know what to practice. It is in each students' music folder.
4) Write how much time you practiced every day in the Essential Elements Book. Each student should practice a minimum of 15 minutes a day.
How to Succeed In Math Classes
The teachers in the math department all love teaching math here at Mt Nebo! We want to help each of our students learn, and we have many resources to help our students succeed. Generally, we do not give homework. The exception is when students are absent or do not work in class. Students are expected to complete class assignments, quizzes, and tests whether they are in class or not. Here are some ways students can get help besides working in class:
- Find missing assignments on Canvas or iReady.
- Work with your teacher before school
- Work with your teacher after school
- Work with either the 6th or 7th grade math tutor
- Work with either the 6th or 7th grade success center
- iReady individualized lessons (My Path)
- iReady teacher assigned lessons
If you wonder how to access any of those resources, please contact your math teacher. Your math teacher can direct you to the resource that will work best for you!
For students who love math like we do, we have three options.
1) Many teachers offer extension activities or alternate assignments to challenge these students.
2) Our math club just started after school on Thursdays. It is open to all students who enjoy math, both 6th grade and 7th grade. Through the math club, students have free access to brilliant.org which has a lot of fun lessons and puzzles in math, science, and computers. If a student is not able to come to math club and would like access to brilliant.org, contact Mrs. Luckau.
3) At the beginning of January we will offer an accelerated math class for students considering skipping 8th grade math. Students who qualify will receive an invitation. If a student is interested and does not receive an invitation, they should discuss this with Mrs. Luckau. Occasionally, an exception can be made, but attending the accelerated math class does not guarantee entry into the accelerated pathway.
