12 Ways Teachers Can Build Their Own Resilience Teaching is without a doubt one of the most challenging professions. You are required to make hundreds of small, exhausting decisions each day. Over time, the predicaments test your confidence as an educator and wear out patience. Find the courage and energy to push forward with the help of Instructional Coach Elena Aguilar and the 12 habits she has compiled to build resilience in teachers. Click the photo to view the habits. | Student Mental Health Check-in Board Check out this idea one teacher created to ensure she knew where her students stood mentally each day. This is a great way to remind everyone that we are not alone. We will never forget the "pandemic" or how it made us feel, what we did to keep busy, etc. Have your students write a letter to themselves about where they are right now, what they hope to learn, and where they hope to be. Then, have them read their letters at the end of the year and see how they have changed. This is a great exercise for teachers to do as well, specifically to reflect on the school year and all it would bring. Click the photo for an example writing prompt. Change as you feel fit. |

The Boy Crisis by Warren Farrell, PhD & John Gray, PhD What is the boy crisis? It is a crisis of education. For the first time in American history, our sons will have less education than their dads. It is a crisis of mental health. As boys become young men, their suicide rates go to six times that of young women. It is a crisis of sexuality. They are bombarded with mixed messages, afraid of being too sensitive or not sensitive enough. It is a crisis of fathering. Boys with less-involved fathers are more likely to drop out of school, drink, do drugs, become delinquent, and end up in prison. It is a crisis of purpose. Boys' old senses of purpose- being a warrior, a leader, or a sole breadwinner are fading. Many boys are experiencing a "purpose void", feeling alienated, withdrawn, and addicted to immediate gratification. Compounding this is addicting video games. The Boy Crisis is a comprehensive blueprint for what parents, teachers, and policymakers can do to renew our sons' sense of purpose to help them become men, fathers, and leaders worthy of our respect. | Practicing Presence by Lisa J. Lucas Cher Daniel, Principal at Rapid Valley Elementary School, recommends this book for teachers and administrators. Most teachers enter the field of education to make a difference in children's lives. But many end up, as author Lisa Lucas puts it, "tired, wired, and running in circles". This leads to many teachers abandoning the profession or to burnout many veteran teachers. When teachers care for themselves deeply and deliberately, they are better able to care for the people that matter most in their lives-- their students, friends, and families. Practicing Presence focuses not on doing, but rather on being present in the life of the classroom. This book will give readers the feeling of having a personal coach who provides suggestions and routines so that they not only can deal with being overwhelmed but rise above it. | Onward- Cultivating Emotional Resilience in Educators by Elena Aguilar Onward reveals Elena Aguilar's wisdom and humanity in helping educators find the power within themselves to realize their aspirations, despite the pervasive challenges. It is truly an amazing book, full of brilliant strategies and advice and rooted in her own vulnerable, honest, beautiful experience and stories. Anyone who makes the time to read and sit with this incredible resource will be stronger, happier, and better for it, and, I predict, forever grateful. --Wendy Kopp, founder of Teach for America Robbinsdale Elementary School is doing a book study on this book this year. They are receiving CEU's through Jeanne Burckhard-McKenna at BHSSC as well as an opportunity to earn 3 graded graduate credits through the University of Sioux Falls. There are many topics included and some can be used for circle time or morning meetings where others are more appropriate for counselors to use with individual students. The card sets incorporate key elements of effective safety and prevention programs such as repetition, the need for role-playing, and a visual for younger children to see and hold.
