A Word From Mr. Jerrell
Hello Bobcats!
We have a great first month of school. Our K-3 teachers have begun to make the new Literacy curriculum their own. We have conducted our first round of phonics assessments and started our classroom labs in late September. One of the components of the curriculum I have been most impressed with is the focus on conversational norms and collaborative opportunities around content. In September, I taught a kindergarten lesson on our preferred toy and how we play with it. In October, I will teach lessons in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade classrooms to continue to understand how to support our teachers and students with the new curriculum.
We had a great turnout at our Link to Learning Night this month. We had over 100 parents attend the Q & A session on the Bain Way Document. The Bain Way Document is a living document created in collaboration with staff and families to develop a common vision of who we are and why we exist. From the Q & A session, we had a recommendation to add our commitment to physical and emotional student safety. We will offer up the opportunity for our School Leadership Team to craft our safety statement on Thursday, October 3rd at 3:45 pm in the Media Center. All families are invited to attend the meeting and apply to join the School Leadership Team.
Finally, we will begin our clubs at the end of October. You can see the list of clubs per grade level here. Student will choose their top 5 club preferences during the week of September 30th and will be notified of their club the week of October 7th. I appreciate all of the donations that we have received so far. Special shout out to the Summerwood neighborhood for gathering tons of donations at the end of their pool season. We appreciate our community partners! If you would like to donate some materials, you can find the list of needed items here.
Thank you all for partnering with us in this work!
Bain Proud,
Michael Jerrell

Battle of the Books
Bain Elementary is recruiting fourth and fifth grade students for our Battle of the Books team! Team members will be responsible for reading a prescribed list of books and answering questions in a competition with other schools in our district. Meetings will begin on Thursdays from 3:15pm to 4:30pm. Team meetings will begin on Thursday October 10th (note: changed from previous bulletin). Please be on the lookout in your child's Tuesday folder for registration information. Click here for a list of the BoB books! For more information, email megana.koransky@cms.k12.nc.us.
Second grade Patriotic Program
Second Grade Parents, please mark your calendars for Thursday, November 7 at 9:00 am. The second graders will present their patriotic music program. If you have family or friends who have served or are serving in the United States military, we would like for you to invite them to our performance as our special guests. Mrs. Graham and Mr. Pringle would like the students to dress in colors of red, white, and blue. Thank you!
HEARING SCREENINGS
All Kindergarten, 1st grade students, and students new to CMS, will have a hearing screening performed by the school's Speech-Language Pathologist, unless the school is notified in writing, by Friday, October 18th, 2019. If a student does not pass the hearing screening after two attempts, a "Consent for Hearing Evaluation" permission form will be sent to the parent. Please return this form to Christina Smith, Speech-Language Pathologist, by the required date.
Parents of students being monitored for history of hearing loss should be aware that they will also receive a consent form. Without signed permission, students WILL NOT receive a hearing evaluation by the school's Audiologist.
My Energy Kit Challenge
Bain Library Birthday Book Club
Celebrate your child’s birthday by joining the Library Birthday Book Club and donate a book to the school library in their name during their birthday month! Each child who participates will have their name inscribed on a bookplate on the front end paper of the donated book. We will take a picture of the birthday child holding their donated book to share with you and/or the community. We are now taking birthdays for August, September, and October!
Congratulations to our September Terrific Kids!
