What Did We Learn This Week?

Language Arts

This week we read a great story called My First American Friend. It was written by an 8 year old about when she moved to the United States from China and how she met her first friend, Ali. We read the story together and then completed a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast Sarunna and Ali using details from the story. In reading comprehension, our focus was on drawing conclusions/making inferences in stories. This is a higher level thinking skill and uses story clues along with prior knowledge to make an inference in the story. In grammar, we learned about object pronouns. Sometime after winter break, we will begin writing about our present life in 2nd grade!

In math this week, we practiced adding with money and adding up to the 1000's place. We also introduced addition clue words to find when solving word problems. Those words are: in all, sum, total, and altogether. We practiced highlighting the clue word and writing a number model for each problem.

Dear 2nd grade parents,

Our ARIOT KOTEV Hebrew letter is ד (DALED) and the story with this letter is about קַבָּלַת הַסִּדּוּר KABALAT HASIDUR—how appropriate for our 2nd graders who just got their own Siddurim last week!

This is a great app for Hebrew vocabulary (perfect to use during winter break!):

Social Studies

This week we completed many worksheets to practice learning the location of our continents and oceans. I hope your child taught you our continent song! We also really enjoyed playing the games on the iPad and Sheppard Software to test our knowledge of where the continents and oceans are located!
