THE IMPORTANCE OF SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
Did you know?
Showing up on time every day is important to your child’s success and learning from preschool forward.
Missing 10% of school (1 or 2 days every few weeks) can make it harder to:
• Gain early reading and math skills.
• Build relationships.
• Develop good attendance habits.
High quality preschool and kindergarten has many benefits!
• The routines your child develops will continue throughout school.
• Make the most of early grades by encouraging your child to attend every day.

IF YOU HAD A MAGIC PENCIL...
Malala Yousafzai is the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize . Her book, Malala's Magic Pencil is used as part of the third grade curriculum in the Stand Up and Say Something Unit of Study in Social Studies, as they study the 7 Civic Dispositions. The dispositions are: promotion of the common good, individual responsibility, commitment to justice, open-mindedness, critical mindedness, compassion, and negotiation & compromise. The students wrote what they would use their magic pencil for if they had one and also made a video.
The story is about Malala, a Pakistani child, who made a wish for a magic pencil. She wished to use it to make everyone happy, to erase the smell of garbage from her city, and to sleep an extra hour in the morning. But as she grew older, Malala saw that there were more important things to wish for. She saw a world that needed fixing. And even if she never found a magic pencil, Malala realized that she could still work hard every day to make her wishes come true. (from Goodreads)
MRS. RYLL'S SCIENCE CLASS
This week, in Mrs. Ryll's science class, the students are working on the Pushes and Pulls Unit. They were studying the force needed for pushing heavier vs lighter balls. They used a ping pong ball, bouncy ball, and a marble and made tracks to push their balls through. A straw was used to push the pair onto the balls and make them roll. They then had to measure their findings to see how well each ball moved.
SECOND GRADE ART
The second grade has been working in Art with Mrs. Westberg on analogous colors. Analogous colors are groups of colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. An example is red, orange, and red-orange. They also used tape resist- students used painters tape to create trees. They then painted liquid water color over it, adding table salt for texture. They then removed the tape and used a fine point sharpie to create the birch tree.
For the paintings they chose warm or cool colors- that created analogous colors because they painted a wet on wet process. This means they wet the water color paper before adding the pigment.
HUDSON POLICE CITIZENS' POLICE ACADEMY
The Hudson Police Department will be hosting a Citizen’s Police Academy beginning March 7, 2023. The objective of the Citizens Police Academy program is to allow citizens to learn about and observe first-hand the workings of their police department and get an inside look at law enforcement. Participants will be instructed by members of the department in a variety of subjects. These subjects will be taught in various settings and will include hands-on experience. The key to the success of this program is the enthusiasm and participation that the citizens bring to our Citizens Police Academy.
The Citizen Police Academy will be held at the Hudson Police Department once a week for ten (10) weeks. Topics of discussion and training will include administrative operations, patrol operations, detective bureau and criminal investigations, criminal and constitutional law, courtroom procedures, communications center, motor vehicle law, use of force, special ops, and community outreach.
Sessions run from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays. Some classes may be held at other locations. Full attendance at each class is required for a graduation certificate.
Minimum criteria to attend the academy is that you must be at least 21 years of age prior to the start date, be a Hudson resident, or work in Hudson, have no prior felony convictions, and no misdemeanor arrests within 2 years of application. A full background check will be completed on all applicants. There is no fee to attend and a polo-style uniform shirt will be provided.

FRIDAY SCIENTISTS IN MRS. REGH'S AND MRS. CALVANESE'S ROOMS
Each week a student in Mrs. Calvanese's class and Mrs. Regh's class chooses an experiment. The student follows a format for a lab report and presents it to the class. The student then performs the experiment. This week, in Mrs. Calvanese's class, a boy showed how to create a chemical reaction and make a gas. When baking soda and vinegar were combined, a gas was created, The evidence of this gas was seeing the balloon fill up with it as the ingredients were added. In Mrs. Regh's class, a girl also created a chemical reaction. She mixed hydrogen peroxide with yeast that was aded to water. It's called a foam explosion!
