We Love Our School Counselors!
Lockdown & Stay Put
January Stay Put
As you are aware, on Friday January 13th the school district was contacted by the Riverton Police Department to put our school in a Stay Put while law enforcement sorted out a possible situation in town. While the situation ended up resolving and deemed to be non-threatening, we took the information seriously and responded immediately and appropriately given what we were informed. We placed our school in a stay put in accordance with local law enforcement and remained in this state until local law enforcement gave us the “all clear” call.
What is a Stay Put?
A stay put is used in various situations. Sometimes it could be a medical emergency, maintenance could be finishing a project, the drug dog is in the halls, safety, or simply a training exercise. When we call for a stay put, we do so over the loudspeaker, and all students are to remain in the location they presently are or immediately get to a classroom if in the halls and lock the door. At that point, students and teachers remain in class and continue the lesson until they hear further instruction. When we went into a stay put, our staff and students did as trained and did an excellent job clearing all hallways and bathrooms within a minute of the call.
While the school is in a stay put, we do lock all exterior doors and do not allow for student pick up during that period. If you are at the school, our electronic marquee will say “We are in a stay put, no check ins or check outs”. Once that notification goes back to normal, your student may enter or exit again.
What is the difference between a stay put and a lockdown?
A lockdown is used in the case of immediate concern or danger within a known close proximity to the school. We have trained our staff and will be re-training our students to follow the “Run, Fight, Hide” national guidelines during our practice drills. At the time of a lockdown, clear information will be given on what the situation is, so students/staff can respond appropriately.
*Our February drill will include a practice lockdown and we will inform you prior to this taking place.
Winter Blues are Real!
This time of year it's not uncommon for students to feel the winter blues. The cold weather coupled with a lack of sunlight can put a student in a mindset that's not their "normal" or the baseline you have come to know. If your student or one of their friends is noticeably off, please try to make it a point to plan something fun, shake up the routine, or have a conversation. If you feel your student has lost interest in things that used to be fun and you need our counseling staff to visit with your child please feel free to reach out to the school.
If you have a serious concern about the well being of your child or one of your children's friends, please do not hesitate to seek immediate assistance especially if this occurs in the evening or on the weekend:
