Target Time: We are excited to announce that students will soon have a new opportunity to study before and after school at SMS, Target Time. Target Time is a quiet place for students to work on class assignments and learning. Students make a commitment to stay after school or arrive before school to work on their assignments in a quiet environment facilitated by a teacher. Target Time will take place on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Thursday afternoons. The Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon Target Time will begin the week of April 18th, and the Thursday morning Target Time will begin the following week. Please see the information sheet and permission slip for additional details. Space in Target Time is limited and is available on a first to sign-up basis.
Lunch Deliveries: If your child forgets his/her lunch for the day, they may order a lunch from the cafeteria during Flight Time. Lunches are free to all students for the 2021-22 school year. You may also drop-off a lunch for your student. Please be sure to mark the lunch with his or her name. Please DO NOT have a lunch delivered from a meal delivery service such as Door Dash, etc. We are receiving an increasing number of these orders and our office staff cannot get the orders delivered since this is a particularly busy time in the office.
Greenhouse Closure: With the onset of warmer temperatures the greenhouse at SMS is also heating up, often making it warmer than comfortable as a lunch location. Due to the decreasing numbers of students using it as a space to eat lunch and the rising temperatures inside of it, beginning April 14th, we will no longer open it during lunchtime for the remainder of the school year. To offset the loss of this space for those students wanting a space that is quieter than the Commons, we will increase the number of tables available in our outside Courtyard at the Activities Entrance.
Outdoor School: 6th grade students will have the opportunity to attend NWRESD’s Outdoor Science School on May 9 and May 10. This year, the experience will consist of two field trips during the school day, one to Trickle Creek Campground and one to either Rood Bridge Park or Champoeg State Park. More information on this, including permission slips, will be provided to students in 6th grade Flight Time classes soon. If you have a 6th grade student, please keep an eye out for Outdoor School specific emails in your inbox in the coming weeks.

A Message to Parents Regarding Volunteering
We are excited to share that starting on Monday, April 4th we will begin welcoming volunteers back into our schools! We know that it has been a long time since we’ve been able to have volunteers inside our buildings, and we can’t wait to welcome back our families and caregivers in this way.
Current regulations from the Oregon Health Authority and Oregon Department of Education will require that all volunteers are either vaccinated for COVID or have an approved exception form. Vaccination cards will be shown to front office staff at the start of your first volunteer date and will not need to be shown again on subsequent dates. Exceptions forms will need prior approval from our human resources department, and can be found here: Medical Exception Request or Religious Exception Request. Completed exception forms should be emailed to Steve Emmert at semmert@sherwood.k12.or.us for approval, then Human Resources will notify the Admin Assistant in the location where the volunteer will be serving.
All volunteers will also need to confirm that they are free from COVID symptoms prior to volunteering. Attestation questions will be added to the volunteer check-in process and will be completed by volunteers each time they arrive at the school. If you are scheduled to volunteer and have been exposed to COVID or have had COVID symptoms in the last five days we will ask that you please reschedule for another volunteer date.
Finally, all volunteers will need to complete a background check form prior to volunteering (please allow for a 7-10 day processing time). That form can be found linked here.
School wide opportunities for volunteering will be shared by our Parent Support Organization (PSO). If you are not currently signed up as a volunteer through our PSO please visit their webpage linked here.
